"The Ring" Effect

I know there was a post about a year ago in regards to "The Ring" effect when the girl walks out of the well. Lincoln Mercury also did a commercial recently with the same effect.

Has anyone perfected this effect-- does anyone know how to create this effect.

It's been a long while since I have seen the movie, so I don't remember if there was a different effect for her coming out of the well. IndyMogul did an episode for the coming out of the TV effect.
 
Film someone doing any activity, but have them do it slowed way down AND backwards. Film with at least half the usual shutter speed. Then reverse the clip and speed it up to at least 2x.


Boom!

You should be well on your way.
 
Just shoot someone, speed it up, and then take out chunks of frames.
Maybe skip every 3rd frame, or take out 4 frames every 15 frames. Play around
 
instead of 1/60th (if your shooting @ 30p or 60i) shoot 1/120th or higher. the smaller the fraction is the lesser amount of time the shutter is open. the filming backwards is spot on to give it that unnatural movement effect. and of course after you speed it back up to just under real time. you cut little chunks of footage out at seemingly random lengths and intervals except you time them so that the effect happens when you want and ends when it should. if you keep the camera still and shoot some blank footage without the actor there , you can splice in or just use as an underneath layer the balnk footage, so when you cut a chunk of footage out, they will dissappear, and then suddenly re-apper a chunk further ahead in the footage. you can move the clips closer to make it look like they are instantly skipping ahead with little time in between, or none at all.

Have to take issue with this post. Because I followed your instructions word for word and now they are suing me. What went wrong? :dankk2:

PS and what do I do about the nightmares caused by watching Speed?

TO OP. I also think in the effect you are talking about theres some frame removal going on. So Id experiment with that as well.
