The Red Raven ships this Thursday March 17th!!! Who else is excited?!

and another camera is born that i can't afford. outside of jarred land himself descending from the clouds and giving this poor and lowly filmmaker a RED to make his movie, it looks like i'll never own one.

Don't worry, in 2 years it will become replaced with yet another camera you can't afford. :undecided

I do sometimes wonder why it is these cameras have to be so expensive. Why can't we have Epics for a couple thousand dollars? Why do they have the cost as much or more than new cars when they don't require the same amount of raw material, as many parts or the same safety regulations?
The easy answer is economy of scale. Because they're a niche product. Yet they woudn't be so niche if they were a couple grand a piece rather than $30K a piece. It seems like they would just need a more efficient manufacturing process like the auto companies have.

Of course I'm probably wrong and someone will chime in to tell me why, which is great. But it does seem to me that cameras are just too expensive for what they really are.

R&D, Manufacturing, marketing, support staff, other misc. overhead and profit.

Just like any other company.

At the end of the day you are right. All a camera is...is a computer with buttons and a sensor. If you can buy a digital video camera for $100-$300, that then goes to show what you're really paying for is the sensor. All the technology is out there to make a digital video camera. It could easily be re-produced, it's just the sensor that is the issue. If a company wanted to, all they would have to do is reverse engineer the sensor they like and they could then make their own. Probably could manufacture it for $500, in a smaller body for maybe $200. Just look at the BlackMagic Design Pocket Camera or the Sony A6300 about to come out. Both in the $1,000 price range. So obviously their manufacturing costs can't be more than $300-$500 per camera. And they both have pretty amazing sensors.

My guess is they are marking up the prices by 300% to account for profit to the them, to the vendor, and for risk in lossed inventory, damaged inventory, returns, etc. So my guess is the Red Raven body which costs around $6,000 for the brain, probably costs around $2,000 to make. Which is roughly in line with building a small high powered computer. They then do the same thing with their other components, the monitor probably costs $500 to make because they have to pay the programmers to work on, troubleshooting bugs and add-ons prior to release. So they then sell it for 3x roughly that.
