The really bad things about the Indie Film Biz heading into 2013

good independent films with critical acclaim from the biggest film festivals that later become cult classics do not get a fair shake in distribution(theatrical, dvd, vod, ...etc.). this happened and is happening(it's not a theory, we are talking about actual movies from 2012, and years past) because of the studios. because of all the fees, insurances, advertisement the studios pay to themselves, because they control theater distribution, because of their bookings, the heavy pockets remain heavy without actual work, they take profit without doing the work. and they do oppose any film that is not theirs. they control the distribution.

self distribution does not mean you can ask your film to open in 2500-3000 theaters, or choose an appropriate opening date, self distribution would be, you making a deal with one theater at a time for a total of maybe 12-48 theaters(limited to no advertisement in regular channels because of the inflated prices). that's less exposure than limited distribution deals, and small theaters that used to cater for independent films were attacked by studios, to the point of running them out of business.

imagine if you go to the hospital for a small cut or bruise, and walk out of the hospital one hour later $500-1000 lighter, if you did not have insurance that is, who put the prices there, did the hospital spend that much on you, is the doctor getting paid that much for 5-10 mins of his time(he's not getting paid that much), would the insurance company pay that much each time a patient under insurance get treatment. is it a scam? it's not like that in most countries around the world. are they forcing people to buy an imaginary insurance that they would not otherwise buy or need if the prices were reasonable(and not inflated to force insurance)?. and as a side effect of their greed make some people suffer even when they have insurance, because now the insurance some people have will not cover some treatments and these treatments will cost a fortune(on the new scale that the insurance made).

All marketing does is let you know something exists. Marketing doesn't make you want something that is not good. If marketing could make people want something then marketing could get people to go see John Carter at the theater even though it's terrible and just a bunch of empty CGI.

Why did Birdemic get a distribution deal and get a limited release? It's a terrible, terrible movie. Think John Carter with less story, worse acting, and CGI that could be done better by a 12 year old with After Effects (No offense to 12 year olds with After Effects, most of them do a much better job than me).

The director/producer entered Canne but didn't get in. So he went to Canne anyway and pimped his film on street corners. People saw it and realized it was so bad, it was art. It's the kind of bad that you can't make if you try to make something bad on purpose. You can only make something this bad if you truly think you are making a master piece but actually have no clue of what you are doing. You know, Ed Wood bad.

People didn't go see Birdemic because it was marketed. They went to see it because people appreciate movies that are so bad they are art. The marketing just let people know that such a movie existed and was available for them to watch.

The problem isn't marketing. The problem is you can't make something as bad as birdemic even if you try.

Do you seriously think the makers of Birdemic thought they were making something good? I guess this is my nightmare come true, and it proves the old saying wrong "It's better to have tried and failed than never have tried at all" This is the kind of thing I wake up in a cold sweat over. I think I have a pretty good self censor, and it's probably the reason I haven't done a damn thing in this business. I guess I need a little Roger Corman in me. At least they got out there and made a movie, but I can't help but think the world would be a better place if this movie was completely removed from existence.

I believe they are doing a remake (already) and for the starring role Nicholas Cage has been mentioned, .

Ahh, then they must have changed it to where all the dialogue is either whispered or shouted and everything is on fire. .. :-) SNL

Have you watched the interviews with the film maker? He is not a very good actor, and yes, he obviously believed he was making a great piece of cinema and he was very, very proud of that.

I LOVE Birdemic! This is a horrible movie that got made and got limited distribution because of the passion of the film maker that worte, directed, and produced it,and then went out with confidence and pimped it at Canne as if it was The Notebook or something. This should be extremely motivational for anyone that likes to make films.

Yes, but it proves that you need to be a delusional crazy loon with a complete distortion of reality to succeed in the film business.

Yes. Read the interviews. The guy is extremely cool, he set out to make a serious film but when he saw that people were loving it (for all the wrong reasons) he decided to embrace it for what it was. He even signs autographed coat hangers at screenings.

Have you seen it? Hands down the most enjoyable experience I've ever had in a theater. The audience enjoyed it for what it was and joined in on the fun. It was a superb experience, and I for one was very pleased that it exists.

Well, Okay. I've seen the trailer, and I regretted the time I gave to that. I'm not sure I could sit through the whole running time in a theater. Django Unchained is the most enjoyable movie I've seen in a theater in quite awhile.

Perhaps a good mission for time travelers from the future?

Your mission, if you choose to accept it fellow temporal agent of change... is to go back to the early 21st Century and make sure that the cult low budget horror film Birdemic never gets made and distributed.

Of course, the risk is that some nefarious evil power hungry time traveller gets his or her hands on a copy of Birdemic, and takes it back to ancient times and shows it to the ancient Greeks, thus creating an alternate reality where society as we know it never develops. In its place, a primitive race controlled by the cinematic powers of Birdemic. You see, Birdemic might look like bird crap to us, but to ancient peoples it would be almost magical. Whoever travels to the time of ancient man and wields the power of Birdemic, shall possibly become a god.

Crucial clarification -- I didn't say Birdemic was the most enjoyable movie I've seen... I said that the experience was the most enjoyable. It basically turned into a modern-day Rocky Horror type of experience, with huge audience participation, and the whole event was enjoyable.

Watching Birdemic by yourself on Netflix streaming... maybe not so much. :)
