I've mentioned before (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-sound-in-the-landscape/page2&highlight=em172) the usefulness of the remarkably affordable and good Primo EM172 omni capsules for ambient recording, but I've noticed that the main UK supplier has now started to sell these already finished in small aluminium enclosures, with clip and cable (both singly and in stereo pairs), as the Clippy EM172 microphone (http://micbooster.com/primo-microphone-capsules/65-clippy-em172-microphone.html).
I bought a matched pair (all of £44) for the latest ambient recording experiment (semi-binaural use on headphones/hat, for more minimalist/stealthy recording than my usual large blimps - acoustically successful even if sartorially highly suspect...), but it also occurred to me that they might just have a wider value as a lav mic in some instances (esp. for those on a low budget), hence this post.
OK they are much chunkier (12mm diameter and 24mm long) than a lav mic, but visibility doesn't always matter and, on the positive side, they have much lower self-noise (14dBA) than any lav mic that I have come across. The stereo pair with 1.5m leads certainly could give a quick, low-cost and low-noise means of wiring up, say, an interviewer and interviewee where a reporter type mic might not be desirable. Equally, a much better bass response than lav mics, could suggest use as a plant mic...
Anyway, might be of use/interest to someone, and cheap enough to have a play around with them!
Cheers,
Roland
