The Power of a Laptop

I've seen this topic covered on this site, but I just wanted to cover my tracks while i'm still in my 14 day return policy grace period.

I recently picked up an HP Pavilion AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-50 1.6GHz laptop. I'm going to be using this thing to dump my P2 cards onto, but my P2 cards are STILL on back order, so I haven't had the opportunity to try this thing out. From what I understand, the PC Express Card slot on the side of the laptop should, correct me if i'm wrong, accept P2 cards directly. I'm just wondering if you guys think this machine is fast enough to handle everything.

On the positive side, it's got a 120gig hard drive and also came with a free portable 250 gig external drive!

Anyways, I'd really appreciate some re-assurance on this one. Sorry to bring this topic up again.

the pc express card slot is going to require the duel systems adapter to read full size pcmcia (p2) card.

speed of the machine has little or no effect on how fast the cards transfer. that comes down to the speed of the pcmcia bus in the machine.

Hmmm. Do all laptops require that adapter? I passed on a Toshiba Satellite, and it had '1 PC Card slot that supports one Type II PC Cards; Supports CardBus, 1 Express Card Slot'. I'll kick myself if that didn't need an adapter.

That Toshiba will accept P2 cards without an adapter.

The ExpressCard slots are a newer standard with a smaller physical form factor.

Oh man.

Not only will this be my second return, but i'll somehow have to talk the guy who gave me the original deal on the Toshiba (1499 for 1299, which I passed on during my second choice) into hopefully honouring that price again.

I guess the free hard drive wasn't really worth it afterall.

Thanks for the info guys.

start kicking yourself i guess ; )

i use an older apple 17" powerbook that works great.
you can pick them up used for well under a grand. works great for p2 injest and edit in the field (if you use Final Cut Pro that is)

Yeah, totally true. Thank god for that 14 days.

I was going to go back to the Toshiba Satellite Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5300, which they gave to me for 1299 (orginally 1499). But seeing as power isn't really that big of an issue, I might just go for the Toshiba Satellite Intel Celeron M 440 1.86GHz for $799.99 and pick up a portable hard drive.

Unless, of course, this sounds like a bad idea! I'm only going to be using this thing for dumping footage, so I don't really want to spend the extra cash on power.

A question yet to be answered is will the pcmcia slots on many laptops handle the 16G. There were some ti's in the some hp models that could not handle the 8G. Looking forward to hearing reports.

form what ive heard toshiba has about the worst customer service in the buisness.

i have a widescreen HP pavilion dv8000 that i picked up about 8 months ago for just under 2grand. it has a full size pcmcia slot and is a pretty capeable "firebreather" done a good bit of 3d work on it and it FLYS!

I personally own a Toshiba, and have steered a number of people towards them. Never had a problem (OK, my own laptop has one green stuck pixel, but that's it).

Well I took back the HP and ended up getting a Toshiba. It's a Toshiba Intel Pentium Dual Core T2080 1.73GHz, with Type 2 Cardbus support.

Now if all is good in the universe, this should work with the P2 cards and I will have made my last laptop return.
