I took a trip to B&H's super store in NYC a couple of weeks ago. I had my HVX with me. Not in the safest bag but I really wanted to travel light. I went inside, and as it was only my second time inside, the equipment geek in me was drooling. I wandered around a bit, and noticed the display of pro camera bags by size. I went to the smallest of them. A salesman walks up. "Can I help you sir?". I reply, "yes, I've been trying to find a bag that I can carry the bare minimum of items, so when I travel the city, or anywhere else, I haven't a bulky load to worry about". This has been a long sought mission I've been through on and off for months. A bag that is small, as in just an inch or less longer and wider than the HVX itself, but with an outside pocket or two to fit batteries, P2 cards, even a bus powered hard drive. I want to be able to walk around and grab quick shots of things, whether it be B-Roll or stealing a scene when no one is looking, and not having a 20 pound bag to grab and run off with when I'm caught.
Needless to say, the salesman at B&H said it was a matter of protection, and showed me a bag that was bigger than I intended. The same at EVS in Los Angeles. Protection. But I can't be the only to want this kind of bag. Yes, I know I can get a smaller camera, but I don't need to spend another couple of grand on a newer or better camera. I'm temped as anyone by the Canon 7D & 5D but I have no need for either at the moment. I invested a lot and I'm trying to get my money's worth for a few years.
It's not B&H or EVS's issue that there is no such style bag. But I think it's one that is necessary, for all handheld prosumer cameras. Less to worry about. Whether it's a shoulder bag or a back pack that could even fit a little more, but just tight enough to be the size of a school bag with padding.
Is my idea crazy or does such a thing exist? Do others want this kind of bag, or am I the minority?
