Hey Ryan, Noticed your sig. Not sure what it implies, but if you are seriously deciding which of the two cities to locate to, choose Portland! I've traveled to all 50 states extensively and have been to just about every major city in the United States. Portland is hands-down the most incredible city in the United States, seriously. The people, the vibe, the culture, it's everything you could ask for, especially if you have work lined up. Oh, and I live in Los Angeles, the only reason any human being should suffer through this city is if they have a great job offer lined up or if their psycho enough to try their futile hand at making it in the industry.
Yes direct flash, a total experiment. The true beauty of this shot for me was that it wasn't posed, the Rat was on his way to the top and very much in motion when the shot was taken. The experiment was to dumb down the background using aperture and shutter speed then use the external cam mounted flash to light the subject. I want to get this right, so there will be more forthcoming
I really wanted to try some other stuff today but contractual arrangements demanded I attend a family gathering. I decided to try more flash work. I tried here to use the sun as a key and external camera flash as a fill.
I loosely tried to compose the shot so as to have every one present at in the shot, I missed two!
Again I had strong sidelight from the sun so Dad and Daughter were way in the shadows, I wanted to use just enough direct flash to fill in the shadows without it overpowering the scene. Subject matter and comp are yawning material I know
Last one, using flash as a fill with sun as a backlight
WoW... what lens was used for these? how much is cropped, and how close were you really? There's crazy detail in those... I particularly like the first one.
