The Olympus E-system thread

An older shot from last summer dug up while waiting patiently for this summer.

Sad shot....Near as I could tell, these poor guys could make it down to the sill between the plywood and the glass but with no room to spread their wings they became trapped. I felt bad for getting there too late to help:(

Man your photos are always so great. THey are so sharp and the colors are so vivid ... what, if you don't mind sharing, is your post process like on these photos? How much of that image/color is from the camera and how much is from messing in PS? ANy chance of a before/after?

Anyway, love the shots ... makes me want to run out and take some more ... need to get some better glass though :)

Thanks Larry. Mr. Gull here was given a slight HDR push for detail enhancement and then auto levels was applied in PS along with selective color adjustment also in PS. And here is the shot straight from the camera....From now on, I'm going to lose my lazy ways and list the processing done on each shot:)

Please excuse my ignorance. I know about HDR, I've done some of my own bracketed HDR photos (though I didn't really know what I was doing in the software, just taking defaults, etc) ... but when you say this:

what do you mean? What did you do to "give a slight HDR push"?

And, thanks for the "before" ... nice to see the contrast, though still a very clear picture, but the enhancements really make it "pop" ... and of course, a good eye by the guy behind the camera to grab a good pic in the first place :)

What I mean is not driving with a heavy hand in photomatix and pushing the image too far as in the image below. I dial in as little as possible, just enough to enhance the detail of the feathers, sand etc.

This is NOT a slight HDR push but a major malfunction in PP IMHO. I do see now and then an image such as this in some forums, in my books it's too much.

Nice, thanks for indulging my questions. I'll have to check Photomatix out ... I've been using the HDR script in PS, but I hear Photomatix mentioned often.

You're welcome. I sometimes wonder if the HDR push is really valid. Below are three images. The first straight from camers, second tweaked only in PS using levels and selective color and the third is the same as the second with HDR push.

Great info here Mino, and as always, fantastic pictures. The before and after really helped out to see your process on the bird shot.

Three older shots from the old e-500. PP for all...Levels adjustment and selective color adjustment in PS

Great pics Mino. Larry R asked what I wanted to ask also about HDR. Appreciate your answer but I'm still not clear. I understand HDR to be "stacking" various exposures of the exact same image and playing with opacity of each layer. After this process something called tone mapping is done. Are you interchanging these terms or are you actually using two or more exposures of the same shot? Plus tone mapping? Does your camera allow for storing multiple exposures of the same shot off of one shot?

Thanks .....
