I'll be honest, I was skeptical at first. I found some videos on Youtube of the HD in use and I was quite impressed. I'll have to get my hands on one and give it a shot. You can't beat the price on these little things either.

agreed. I used the mini on a live sporting event, and it def. proved itself. I really like the size when in a crowded environment, it just 'fit' in rather than being bump into by fans. Also, it can mount a H4n zoom perfectly next to the camera. So anyone shooting live, on the spot interviews can get smooth shots while running a short xlr cable from the zoom to one of the mics that you can attach on the top. Oh, and you can set it down and it wont fall over!!! Overall, im very impressed with the product. For the price and build, and of course the results, i suggest adding this to any arsenal.

New Direction and Nantnee make good points... thanks for the comments.

News: Halo Rig spotted! - Microsoft's videographer was using the Halo Rig HD at the NAB convention this past weekend, more to come.

Should I be getting the Halo Rig for my HMC150 or would the Halo Rig mini be better for the HMC150 if all I plan on using is the camera and an XLR mic? Wouldn't the smaller ring make it more stable overall?

Edit: I also plan on using it with my 60D so I'm worried about getting a bigger ring for more slack and throwing off balance.

Hi Hunter,

We spoke over email but I would like to respond here for others that may have the same question.

When it comes to the differences of the HaloRig MINI and the HD, the most important thing to consider is size. There are measurements under the FAQ on our website halorig.com along with more details.

You want to pick a HaloRig based on what accessories you would like to mount to it along with the size of your camera. For a few examples: DSLR's and small accessories work nicely on the HaloRig MINI and keep your rig more compact overall. But, if you want to mount a large LCD monitor in the middle with a DSLR you may want to consider the larger, HD. If being compact is less of a concern the HaloRig HD gives you more flexibility of mounting larger accessories and should be considered for larger format cameras like the HMC-150, AC160, EX1, etc.

When it comes to stability and functionality the HaloRig MINI and the HaloRig HD, they are very very similar. They both have 5 accessory mounting areas, handle up to 10lb cameras, a 1/4" threaded hole to mount a tripod/monopod, and more. There is only a 1" difference in the cross support so you obtain maximum stability for your camera with either HaloRig. Though, technically the 1" longer cross support on the HD would be more 'stable'. The further your hands are from the camera increases stability and a larger HaloRig HD has more slightly more innertia.

In reality you can do the opposite and mount a EX1 on a MINI and a DSLR on a HD, so its really up to your personal preference and needs in relation to size.

If anyone has any questions about what works best with their particular camera and accessories feel free to email us the details @ info[a]halorig.com for the fastest response!
