I just got back from seeing The Night Listener. It was really really good. The desperation of Robin Williams' character is shown greatly. This is one of (if not the best) Robin Williams performances ever. It was a subtle performance, but conveyed in a way that you're just blown away by. Toni Collette did a great job with her character as well. She really makes you wanna feel for her.
For those who don't know what the film is about, it's about a radio show host (Williams) who reads this book written by this kid (played by Rory Culkin) that tells about the kid's abuse as a younger child. Williams' character is amazed at the kid's tale and his writing ability. They end up talking to each other on the phone everyday for a couple of weeks. Toni Collette plays the kid's adoptive mother. After a couple of weeks is when the story gets more interesting. I can't really go into details because anything else I say might give too much info.
This film is great. It was low budget, superbly acted, directed, written. I really think that Williams should get an Academy Award nomination for his performance in the movie. I'm still up in the air about whether or not Collette should be nominated for Supporting Actress, but I'm leaning towards saying she should. She really did a great job.
Go check this movie out, it is really really good. Definitely going to be on my top 10 of 06.
