the NEWS in 24p?

was wondering about your thoughts on if you like to see the local news in 24p or if people in your news market are shooting with this. or do you think it is odd? should it be always in 60i? or do you think it would be weird to have some of the newscast in 60i and a story or two in 24p? does anyone really care? I caught a few stories in 24p and thought it looked FAB FAB, but others may not?

People inherently associate the 60i look with "real time". If the news were shown in 24p, it might create a kind of barrier between the viewer and the actual content. It's been ingrained in our minds 60i=real, 24p=fake. I don't think that's changeable. Of course, if they start doing it on the MTV networks and other channels targeted at the "younger-set" (who, BTW, need to GET OFF MY LAWN!) then maybe 24P news will be the standard in 20 years or so... Assuming we're not getting all feeds in some frame rate that rivals true life vision...

Ha, half the news is fake anyways. Just kidding... too much time in my mass comm class today, talked about VNRs from PR and stuff like that. And Michael Glass (heard of that guy? crazy). that's OT though...

I think news in 24p would be an interesting experiment. Karl is right about associations. But it would be interesting to see it experimented with.

I've seen 24p footage in newscasts.

It's true that it doesn't have that "live" look, and oft times people wonder what's "funny" about the footage.

Doesn't mean it can't be done, but I do think 60i is better-suited for a live, on the spot feel. 24p may seem more like it was recorded earlier.

Broadcast is 60i. News is down and dirty, get it done fast. Why bother messing with 24p when all your infrastructure is built around 60i? Also, news is supposed to be about the story not the look.

24p is 60i on tape or out firewire. Nothing needs to change at all.
Sure 24p with a 3:2 pulldown is 60i. So nothing would need to change if the news were just footage being played back. What about the motion graphic backgrounds that are being played back from Chyron's and Deko's? All of these graphics are currently 60i. 24p footage set in a 60i motion frame wouldn't look right. The stations paid a kings ransom to have these graphics designed by outside companies such as Giant Octopus. I don't think they are in any hurry to pay to have them reworked at 24p. They're far too busy figuring out how to pay for all the new HD gear.
Then factor in all the 60i file footage. Cutting back and forth between 24p and 60i will look terrible. You could post process the 60i footage to make it look like 24p but that would take some time. What about the live studio cams? Are they capable of outputting 24p?

Nothing needs to change at all?

Nothing technical needs to change, no. You're talking about something different now.

See my post #4 for the aesthetic challenges. And root around the board for my posts on the reasons why you shouldn't edit 24p on a 60i timeline.

I think we both agree that you should maintain a consistant framerate. It should be all 24p or all 60i. Otherwise it's a cobbled together mess that looks bad.

Not true at all. 24P footage can sit very nicely in a 60i timeline, no problems whatsoever. Now do I agree that this should be done for news, not necessarily but it most certainly can be done and has been done many times. If you look at many reality shows today (God forbid) such as the ones on Bravo, many of those are now shot in 24p. I think the world is slowly changing.

If you just toss it all together, it can be jarring, but if you do it with some kind of plan, it can be effective.
