The New World

Only one more month until the new Terrence Mallick film comes out. The trailer looks like it will be another great film by one of my favorite directors. Does anyone know the actual release day in November?

November 9.

I too am looking forward to this picture (and visiting Jamestown and all of VA when I get back east on the topic of). I love history and period epics. My favorite films.

As much as I dig 'The Thin Red Line' (I have grown to really enjoy it although the hypereal approach other war films is what I crave) I hope this film has a quicker pace and isn't as self-serving and indulgent as that one

Thanks, November 9 is in my sights.

The settlers first landing is about a half an hour from me, and Jamestown is about forty five minutes. It's funny because I really learned to appreciate the history here after moving back from Colorado. When I was little, passing Civil War battle sites was just a marker on the way to the amusement park. I guess my priorities have changed a bit. :)

In San Diego where we no history; oh wait, there's a couple Spanish Missions and some historical 'Native American sites'. Big whoopie doo..

The trailer looks fantastic for this. I'm curious to see the visuals on the big screen and see what he did what the material. I hope to god its nothing like The Thin Red Line though. Dreadful. I walked out half asleep halfway through.

I know what you mean with THIN RED.

It took more than a few veiewings for me to appreciate that film. Thin Red Line goes wrong when we get shot after shot of flowers and bushes and animals and then voiceovers that I suppose should be poetic and how many people are telling the story anyway ?

I appreciate THIN RED and have learned from it as it does shine in some points; the photography is masterful, the score , the talent. It is a first rate picture in technical acheivments, but overalll? One of the more overrrated films I have ever witnessed. 3 hours of voice-over philosophy and nature watching

Here's a line:

"What's this war at the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? Is there an avenging power in nature? ''

What the ****?

Yeah the multiple voice overs throw the story all over the place! In the end I was left shaking my head going there's a great movie in there somewhere...now pass the Excedrin!

LOL.

I was gonna add; I pray NEW WORLD isn't the 'surreally poetic nature trip' THIN RED was. I hope it's straight with the audience and not indulgent

FAV WAR ?

Hmmm. We had a Poll about this recently. When I think about a war film; I think of a modern combat film. A film that gives you WAR. Which is why I will not put Shindlers List into the pack (even though that is one of my all-time favorite films) nor will I put films like The Pianist or The Deer Hunter; for they are 'products' of war in my eyes and not WAR FILMS.

I'll start with listing my favorites:

Platoon - My favorite WAR film outright and a war that I was alive during even if I was 5 years old in 1975. This film brings you into the heart of combat; the men that die and fight for our liberties.

Saving Private Ryan - The best combat sequences ever put to screen. Period.

Black Hawk Down - The second best combat sequences ever put to screen and documenting an event most people did not even know about (which shows the true control our government has over the major media)

Apocalypse Now - Can't describe why I love this film; I just do.

Full Metal Jacket - The bootcamp scenes alone are freaky (I was in bootcamp).

Glory - One of the more powerful films I have ever watched. A true classic masterpiece.

Good list!

Totally agree on Platoon. Probably my favorite.

Saving Pvt Ryan has some freaking amazing imagery. The beach alone is a movie in of itslef.

Full Metal Jacket is interesting to me because it feels like 2 movies, and I like the first one better. LOL. The bootcamp sequence is so powerful and raw. Its tough to watch.

A lot of intense imagrey in Black Hawk. I actually liked that one a lot more than I thought I would.

And Glory was an incredible movie, battle sequences and all. All around a nicely made flick.

I guess for me one I'd really love to see done well would be the American Revolution. The Patriot was ok, but something more encompassing of the whole war.

So, what is it? Did you leave halfway through, or did you stay til'l the end?

I really liked Thin Red Line, but I'll admit it was pretty heavy handed. A recut of this movie would have to include John Travolta on the cutting room floor and a throat losange for Nick Nolte.

I didnt think I needed to say (again) I left shaking my head halfway through....

I've seen it all the way through now thanks to the magic of cable tv.

Good point. A nice performance from Nick (by all of the actors in fact) but the non-stop screaming; jesus. Chill out dude. No dynamics.

The coming PACIFIC WAR and Eastwoods FLAGS will no doubt blow the WAR in the PACIFIC concept off the charts.

Did i hear someone slate TTRL? I'll let you off for now. I can't wait til The New World. I hope that it will be poetic in nature. Terrence Mallick - I love you man.

I am very excited to see this movie as well.

Last year I finished the first draft of a script that takes place in 1611, it was called "The New World". I really loved the title and then this past January I went on IMDB to see if the name had ever been used and there was Malick's new film. :(

The guy does a film like every 10 years - what are the odds.

Anyway, it took me a few months but I finally found a new title I like just as much.

Still, the trailer for this looks awesome.
