The new OS blues...

I hate having to go to the next newest operating system (win) to enable some feature in my costly software collection. I really really hate having that new OS not support a printer, a scanner or any thing I spent money on.

So, when I see a little win icon on my task bar that when clicked says here comes windows ten, I get all nervous and jerky.

Has anybody heard what microsoft is going to render obsolete this time around?
 
Nobody with win 7 has noticed the windows icon on the lower right taskbar ? It just appeared there after the latest updates install...
 
Yep, and the teenage computer nerd next door told me it's all ok. so I registered and now awaiting notice when I can install the update.
 
i like windows 7 and hate windows 8. this little icon stunt is all i need to convince me that i'll hate windows 10 also.

Windows 7 very rarely crashed on me, and Windows 8 never has (almost 2 year old install now). I never see the Windows 8 (Metro?) interface. It loads faster than 7.

I never understood the Win8 hate.
 
Win 8 hate springs from moving control that used to be in one place to another place...and putting stuff on top of it to boot. I imagine if Ford did that in their cars. After vista I would have thought they learned their lesson. All window dressing to some, but I tore my hair out for a while after an update that removed my ability to render to WMV files a couple years ago. it took a lot of googling just to get a hint that it was a poorly written update. Now, as I understand it, this new win 10 will be even more connected to the folks at microsoft.

Does apple do this update thing as well?
 
My general rule of thumb is to never upgrade to any new version of anything -- Windows, NLE, whatever -- until it's been out awhile and others have upgraded and found the bugs in it. I rely on my editing workstation. It is not a beta testing platform.
 
Yeah, I've noticed the Win 10 free upgrade icon on my Win 7 computers for a few weeks now. I plan on trying out the free upgrade, but only after I've made back-up images of my system disks, so I can put Windows 7 back if Windows 10 doesn't work out.

I also have a brand new workstation that has Windows 8.1 on it, and the first thing I did was install the $5 "Start8" app to give me back the Windows 7 interface that I am much more comfortable with. I still have access to the Metro interface when necessary, but most of the time it's completely hidden away.
