The new Nikon D4

Resolution will be soso, do not expect it to be as good as C300 or F3. But it´s also not in the same price range...And D800 is coming up also! http://nikonrumors.com/2012/01/06/nikon-d800-in-february.aspx/
I don't see how the resolution will anything less than 1000 lines. I mean, the image is starting at over 4k and they're doing a proper downscale. There's just no reason like skipping that would result in it being any lower than 1080p. There's nothing magical about purpose built "video cameras" that allows them to resolve more. It's all just sensors, processors, and algorithms...

Not to derail the thread but I sure would like to see Nikon get in the digital cinema market with a cinema camera first and stills second approach.
The D4 looks very impressive as a all purpose DSLR. The skin tones are very nice.

Who said proper downscale? I wish...

Very unlikely the full sensor is downacaled to 1080. I dont think it is possible with current technology (check scarlet, c300 and f3) in such a small body which also has a shutter and takes photos.
And i didnt read any info from nikon implying this nor the footage looks that crisp to be a real1080p (you can tell on the WHY video how footage looks way sharper when switched to timelapse mode).

Has anyone ever hacked a nikon for any reason? Just wondering if higher bit rates would improve the image in terms of resolution. hmmm. The problem is it's so damn expensive, not an easy camera to get to try experiments with. Oh well, wishful thinking I guess.

Apparently someone already accessed the D7000 already.
It might be just easier to write to Nikon and ask for a higher data rate firmware update. I don´t see why that wouldn´t be super simple to implement.

DSLRS are still just still cameras with a video mode. Just sayin...
... Which would make them video cameras.... And video cameras are just still cameras with a motion mode. Seriously, I hope youre joking... Because thats the dumbest statement I've ever heard... Sorry. Cameras are just cameras. They just vary in frame rates. Your just arguing semantics and using circular rhetoric.

it's a very cool camera, with some interesting developments in terms of its usability for video. but the difference between a dslr and a dedicated video camera is not one of semantics. horses for courses....

As usual with DSLRs there's always some crippling factor. This time at least there's a workaround with the HDMI out but I'm gonna be disappointed if it's 1080i. Why add a super fast storage media and only offer a consumer codec? 100Mbit/s+ m-jpeg would be a good option. Everything else except the price tag sounds good so far.

Nikon if you're listening, pull your finger out. It's a pro camera, we want a pro codec! My $600 Nex-5N can do 24Mbit/s H.264.

I will tell you that the images coming out of this camera thus far look outstanding! And I'm not even a "Nikon" guy. Way to go, Nikon.

Video looked great.

It's nice to see the clean HDMI barrier finally broken in DSLR's. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come with other brands as well since I can't afford a D4...

center crop

center crop

So if the camera is 1920x1080 in the center crop cut-out, how are they achieving the same resolution in the full frame image and not getting moire, etc (in video mode)?
