the new IBook

Do you guys think you can do any serious editing on the IBook G4?
I don't mean HD or a feature, but shorts and videos.

I've done more on worse, but never on a laptop.
I've thought about the Powerbooks, but they are pricey and really not much
faster.

i am waiting for the G5 powerbooks whenever they fix the issue with the fans...they would have been out by now if it wasnt for that!

The iBook should be fine... I've done a lot of work with much worse in the past.

The main benefits of the powerbooks (the 15-17) are the screen real estate, the ability to hook up a second monitor, firewire 800, and Cardbus slots. FW 800 works as fw400 if you have any fw400 device in your chain... so that's not a major benefit for video if you tend to have an NTSC monitor/TV connected through a deck or camera while editing. Cardbus, however, does allow you to add independent firewire channels. But you can (and in the past i have) easily gotten along with the one FW channel with a chain of drives with a camera/deck on the end.... provided you don't need more than 2 or 3 video streams at a time...

Even the 12" powerbook allows you to connect a second monitor for increased screen real estate, though it has no cardbus or FW800. For me, that's the real issue, and the annoyance that would prevent from buying an iBook... go to an Apple Store or something and see how comfortable editing is on a single 1024x768 screen..... blech!

Another big difference between the Powerbook and iBook is hard drive speed. Powerbooks are 5400rpm, the iBooks are 4200rpm. I have a 15" Powerbook, and a dual G5 2gb, but really, unless you need a laptop, the iMacs are the most bang for the buck, if you don't need a lot of expandability. For 1799 you get a 2gb G5 processor, 250gb 7200rpm hard drive, 20" monitor, and 8x DVD burner! All built together into a nice, fairly portable computer. Not quite a laptop, but pretty haulable for a G5.

Dual screen iBook:

It's called "Screen Spanning Doctor", here is the web: http://forum.macparts.de/index.php?sid=0d2f4212cf577f55c624a758f7787da6

I have used a 2002 G3 ibook for a bunch of projects. And, it makes a good field monitor too. You'll want an portable harddrive for extra space and moving around.

happy editing!

True, there are a number of such hacks... but I wouldn't rely on a hacked OS for a critically important machine. It certainly makes every software upgrade more complex and risky, even if it doesn't rear its ugly head on its own at some point... I'd highly recommend against it; if the extra screen area is important to you, it's worth paying for.

Can the IBook run Motion 2? It has the ATI Radeon 9550 with 32 MB.

The Apple website lists this answer:

Do I need a Power Mac G5 to run Motion 2?
No. Any Power Mac G4 with an 867MHz or faster processor, at least 512MB of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition graphics card can run Motion 2.

I don't know how graphics cards are graded.

i think you'll have some serious problems trying to run motion with a 32 mb graphics card. I'd say you need at least a 128.
