The mutha lovin Clone Wars

Is there a thread on this series?

I cannot say enough what an achievement this show is, nor can I articulate fully enough its superiority over episodes I, II and III.

Each twenty minute episode starts and ends like the old serials, always with that iconic Star Wars-esque shot at the end, always with some random Yoda-esque quote at the beginning. The real richness of the Star Wars universe comes through in so much more clarity and depth than has been done in any of the movies (even the originals).

I've never read any of the books or comics, but I'm assuming that's where this show is drawing from. George Lucas pretty much incites either a plot line or a story moment in each episode, but you can tell that his toxic hand is nowhere in the vicinity of these scripts.

If you liked any of the Star Wars films, this series is like buttercream cupcakes, seriously. Just a delight.

Of course someday I'm hoping that they do a series based on a post-Vader world, something that could involve the original cast, but whatever they do I just hope they keep doing it. I think they will as George is seeing big money from the toy sales.

With the cancellation of Spectacular Spiderman this is now by a landslide the best animated series out there. Mucho kudos.

Seriously?

I mean I saw one or two episodes and they never really impressed me. Plus the characters, like that new jedi padawan... she annoys the hell out of me. I see nothing of the original series there.

The CG film that spawned the series was absolutely horrific. Saw it with my friends, we were making fun of it every 2 seconds of how terribly is was written.

This is show is pretty good, alot more good than bad, they do a great job with the space battles and expanding the universe, like the clone gone AWOL from last weeks ep, stuff like that works well. I don't love everything about it, watching thousands and thousands of droids sliced in 2 gets repetitive but I make sure not to miss it. I wish they would get farther away from Obi Wan and Anakin and show other stuff going on, I actually would love to see an episode about that guy deserting, I don't think it needs them as main characters to be successful.

There was actually an animated series that ran for two seasons that spawned the CGI film, but the animated series was in the style of Samuri Jack, very little dialog and the episodes were very short.

I agree that the movie left a lot to be desired. I stayed away from the series specifically because of what the movie lacked. But the series, IMO, even in the first season goes from somewhat mediocre to pretty darn terrific.

They had very few "assets" in the beginning of the show and they weren't exactly sure the style they were going for -- it took them the first half of the first season to figure that out.

The big problem with animated series is that they really have to come out swinging and sometimes that can hurt the integrity of the show. Some series like Xmen Evolution and Spectacular Spiderman were given the opprotunity to behave more like a live action show, where they were allowed to engage in true character development over the course of an entire series -- so that everything that happened in previous episodes mattered in the following episodes, etc.

I think Clone Wars can't quite get to the place Evolution and SS were able to achieve in their short runs, but if the series continues to be successful I'm optomistic that we'll see something akin to Batman Beyond and Justice League in their final years when they (finally) started to really build on the characters' personal mythologies and arcs and where real consequences existed over an entire series, not just a single episode.

To me, Clone Wars would be fantastic even if it wasn't about Star Wars. Anyone who's ever tried writing an animation script knows that 22 minutes is an extremely limited amount of writing space, especially considering that it's required that you have at least one big action sequence (but probably as many as two) inside those 22 minutes. The fact that these guys are able to make little movies (the way the original Batman the Animated Series accomplished in its first season -- but, again, BTAS couldn't ascribe to any ongoing series arc elements as shows just weren't (and many still aren't) executed that way) is what makes the writing so magnificent.

When you're talking about episodic action animation series, you really have to compare it to other episodic animation series. The best writing has occured in the DC and Marvel cartoons mentioned here, as well as Wolverine and The Xmen and Gargoyles which also have been able to (or, do in WATX's case) to inch outside the typical parameters that limit the episodic animation series.

To me, Clone Wars, though very early on in its development, deserves a spot alongside these greats (best written and executed) as one of the best animated shows of all time. And with the exception of some terrific writing that was done in the all CGI Transformers show from a few years back (where they were all dinosaurs and primates, etc) I think Clone Wars might be the best CGI episodic series EVER.

The movie was a mistake, but I look at that as more of a practice go for the animators and the writers. It served its purpose and doesn't hinder the show in any major way.

No episodic animated show will ever be able to compete with something like The Iron Giant, Waking Life, Waltz with Bashir, anything from Pixar and a lot of Disney's stuff (even some of the direct to DVD Marvel and DC stuff is pretty remarkable, but specifically Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and DC's latest Wonder Woman movie), but episodic animated show to episodic animated show, Clone Wars stands out as a real achievement IMO.

Sorry, I didn't hear a thing he was talking about. I was mesmerized by the quivering, bulbous goiter below his chin. He's starting to look like one of his own CGI alien creations.

It's the unfortunate side effect of no one telling you "that's a bad idea" in 30 years.

Well maybe I'll check out the new series if it's different from the film. Saw one or two episodes, one I liked, the other I didn't.

The original series, the one like Samurai Jack, I loved. I own the whole series on DVD. Very cool and fun little bits.

But man the clone wars movie... how horrible was that? Then I heard a series was being produced based off that and I sighed.

What happened to the live TV series Lucas was talking about? I was looking forward to that... until I heard he was writing and directing the first season.

I'm sure that for all intents and purposes that's dead. The writers and directors are constantly talking about Lucas's input in the Clone Wars series, I think he's really, really (really) into it because kids really, really like it -- I think, for him, it's like having the magic of the first films back (from a younger audiences' perspective).

But yeah, with what they can do on the cheap now with special effects (and the fact that not a single clone in episode III was an actual actor but just digital composites), they could easily do some live action stuff.

Again, though, I'd like to see something set in the post-Vader universe. Heck, Mark Hamill is still around and I GARAUNTEE he would reprise his role on a television series.

It wouldn't be hard to have Carrie Fisher and Han Solo having lived and died. Just age Hamill a bit, give him some grand kids? I would watch that show, man. I would watch that show.

The series is already ruined. Might as well try to salvage something out of it. Clone Wars is a good start. A post-vader live action show? All the better.

I'll probably catch some flak for this, and don't get me wrong because I'm not anti-Lucas, but I'd like to see someone new do a live action Star Wars film. Maybe even a trilogy. How about Knights of the Old Republic era for the setting? Tons of Jedi and Sith squaring off against each other (example: see video below).

I think an interesting idea would be to get a director who has done some martial arts action films to direct. Think of what the guy that did Hero could do with a Star Wars film.

I think it will happen eventually, there is just too much money to be made for it not to. I would love to see other filmmakers set loose in that universe. Also, I think the live action TV series is still alive, just happening slowly, I would say after the success of the Clone Wars, it's a certainty.
