The Marla66

OK...it's halfway a goof, but...

http://www.changedcrocodile.com/Films/Marla66.wmv (Save as would be better)

was shot using this

Marla66.jpg

Obviously thrown together in a matter of minutes using a Pentacon six TL with an 80mm lens and the built-in ground glass...filthy dirty dusty, too. No provision made to prevent light from affecting the DVX-Pentacon bridge.

But what the heck. I was bored and I just got my set of close-up adapters...

I may even clean everything and make a more permanent mounting solution one of these days.

Oh. The rabbit was 8 feet from the lens, the doorway 2 feet beyond that. Just to give you an idea of the DOF is like. ;D

Not sure. I'm so tired today, I can't even focus my eyes on this monitor...

But the shallow DOF makes it difficult for sure. The way the SLR is set up, it's wide open all the time, so there isn't much leeway at all.

Re: The Marla66

Have to make a mount for the two...this was just to see (more or less) how the image would turn out.

Also need a tube of some sort between the two to stop light from spilling in.

Dan

Re: The Marla66

Never mind. I just now noticed the image is flipped left-to-right.

Oh, well. It's not like I had anything else to do today. ;D

Re: The Marla66

There is something seriously not right about you...

I don't wanna know why you have a bunny on a stick...

I SAID I DON'T WANNA KNOW...

Re: The Marla66

I assume you've called it the Marla66 because of that short movie Marla (www.marlathemovie.com) which uses the same sort of camera set up?

If that's the case, I assume you'll also be making a mount similar to their's? I'm downloading the clip now, I'll edit the post.

EDIT: Wow, that was nice. I like how you don't have any vignetting or a hotspot with that. The Marla crew do. How is this so!? ;D

Yep.

And...I have no idea. I'm zoomed a bit past the edges of the SLR viewfinder, so maybe the vignetting is just "hidden"?

Dan

Re: The Marla66

Yeah, I'm trying to hide the vignetting on my temp-adapter (until I can afford a DVX and micro35) the ghetto35 (;D) by zooming in. It's not bad, I get a nice Super8 look from it (might have something to do with it being a 1CCD camera). I made a quick website for it which is my WWW address under my name if anyone wants to check it out.

But yeah, your footage is looking cool Dan, I'd like to see some footage with some focussing.

Re: The Marla66

OK. New iteration. ;D

EDIT: ignore the below links. Better example at http://www.changedcrocodile.com/Films/Marla/Marla66.html

The whole thing -

The SLR & mount -

And a clip -

http://www.changedcrocodile.com/Marla66/Marla0304.wmv (3Mb 630x352)

http://www.changedcrocodile.com/Marla66/Marla640.mov (8 Mb 640x352)

Problem is...I'm here by myself, so these test shots suck. And the weather is dismal, so I can't go outside for anything interesting. Any suggestions for a better test? "Rack focussing" is a bear with this...can't get a nice smooth change.

So. Think this is worth the effort? I don't really see anything I couldn't do relatively easily with the stock lens.

Oh. Yeah. But if it was nice and bright and sunny, I'd put this on the cam -

Hi Dan,

It looks like you've figured out a nice new purpose for the pentacon 6. I also have the pentacon 6 and a few lenses. Would you please explain in more detail the setup that you have invented. It looks simple and practical.

Thanks.

Ben

I took off the pentaprism viewfinder...just looking straight into the groundglass/lens viewfinder.

Got some plastic sheets from the local DIY store and cut some pieces to fit on top, with notches for the 4 pentaprism posts. Some felt on the bottom piece to get a better/light-tight fit.

The assembly was then wire-tied to the body of the camera, and wire-tied to the DVX sunshade.

The sunshade setscrew goes on the shutter-button side of the camera. That will make sure the image is upside-down, but not flipped left-to-right. NLEs can un flip...but they take forEVER to do. A simple vertical flip is much faster.

I used some black cloth tape to block the rear corners of the sunshade.

I've got a 4+ diopter on the DVX so I can focus on the groundglass.

The plastic pieces hold the film-advance lever to keep the mirror in position.

I'm horrible at explaining things...here are some more photos... Hopefully, you'll see what I mean. :undecided

The only difficult part is handling the camera. You can see in the other pics in this thread how it has to be on the tripod. Awkward, but...

Dan

could you use a periscope type thing utilizing mirrors to level it out so you could aim the camera like normal?

Yep. And lose some f stops, unfortunately. Another option is a prism to right-angle it, but the same applies...less light.

Dan

That might work. The "Kiev" versions are Russian copies of the different models of the Pentacon camera. That one looks like it has the removeable viewfinder on top, which is the important part.

But for a safer buy, you might want to check out the links on this page: http://www.geocities.com/kievgurl/buy.html

The P-6 mount cameras might be easier to get lenses for, too. I'm not sure about the screw-mount versions.
