The Man Who Saved The World

Have not seen this telling of the story but always been fascinated by it. Amazingly enough, another Soviet officer was called The Man Who Saved The World from an incident a full 20+ years earlier during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both times the coolheaded demeanor of a single person prevented likely nuclear armageddon. That incident was explored in a PBS documentary series Secrets of the Dead, and the title of the episode was -- you guessed it -- The Man Who Saved The World. It's available on YouTube.

There probably was a few close calls during the Cold War. And had the wrong person been in charge during any of them history could have looked much different now.

The cuban one was that the one about the submarine officer?

This one I found great because it had a good mix of following the real Petrov on a journey to the US and reenactments of key moments of his past and it was very well filmed/graded...

Yes, the Cuban Missile Crisis one was about the naval commander who just happened to be on the Soviet sub and overruled the captain. The US naval blockade of Cuba surrounded this submarine that was one of four specially-outfitted with a nuclear torpedo as part of this mission. The sub captain was under heavy pressure and was about to fire the torpedo when the naval fleet commander overruled him. The incident was kept secret until after the fall of the Soviet Union. The world has forgotten how close to the brink we were at the time. The man almost definitely prevented World War III.

Where did you see this new documentary about the Reagan-era incident? Is it available anywhere? I remember living through that one.

I saw it on Swedish Television's webpage. It's mostly in English but with the dramatisations of past events in Russian. And obviously only subtitled in Swedish.
I found this documentary pretty unique as it's beautifully shot dramatisations of past events with great acting and then you get to follow current time Petrov on a rather personal journey (that takes him to the US, where he goes to UN and meets Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner and Matt Damon, and back to Russia)

It it can be viewed from Sweden (or by use of VPN) at svtplay.se until the 4th of November.
