The Man Who Saved the World

Wow .. I was 11 at the time, so apparently not interested in world affairs cause I don't remember hearing about any of this ... very interesting story, would make a great film, IMHO ... especially if you include this background information (from the Wiki link) "The incident occurred at a time of severely strained relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. Only three weeks earlier, the Soviet military had shot down a South Korean passenger jet, Korean Air Lines Flight 007[/url], that had entered into Soviet airspace, killing all 269 people on board; many Americans were killed, including US congressman Larry McDonald. "

Edited to add: I guess I should have read both links ... the first one is about a film on this story :) ... but it's a documentary, I think there is also a great narrative piece in this story (think Crimson Tide)

I can't even imagine how would be the world if that one person had pressed that button.............
That article is an interesting read, thanks for posting.

Well the assumption is that the higher-ups would have blindly pushed the button. I would hope the head of Russia would do a little more fact-finding before releasing da bombs......
Even a complete idiot would build in some kind of redundancy to a system of that magnitude.
