I just saw this film, and although I thouroughly enjoyed it, I must say that it did not grab me and reel me in as quickly as any other wes anderson films. Comments? Thoughts?

Re: The Life Aquatic

I thought it was a great film. I really enjoy Wes Andersons visual style. I was wondering, though. Did they shoot it on 16mm or 35mm. Please forgive my ignorance. I'm very new to the world of filmmaking.

Re: The Life Aquatic

Saw it last night. It was alright. Not as good as Royal Tennenbaums. It didn't flow as well, and it never really felt like the story clicked into place. A wonderful visual style though.

Re: The Life Aquatic

Yeah, Issac... I agree with you. With Rushmore, and especially Royal Tennenbaums, I was drawn in right away and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The LIfe Aquatic was halfway over before I was completely drawn into the story.

Damn Issac. You can't say SPOILERS AHEAD and then a 1/4 of an inch down have the SPOIL. Move that down the page man. >:( :o ::) :P

Re: The Life Aquatic

I loved it. thought it was very funny... wes anderson has a crazy imagination... his films do have a style... I have loved all his movies... life aquatic was not my favorite, rushmore was... I think wes anderson is heading in a direction, and I like it.. seems like bottle rocket was his most conventional film... and he as ben getting weirder and weirder with every movie... life aquatic was not what I expected, but I loved it. laughed the whole time

******SPOILERS*********

I really enjoyed The Life Aquatic.  Anderson's films have became very stylized, so if you didn't like the direction he was heading in with the Royal Tenenbaums, I doubt you're going to enjoy this one.  Starting with Rushmore (my fav) Anderson's films have been becoming more and more theatrical and could easily be adapted for the stage.  Considering the absolute garbage being cranked out in mainstream theater, I wish Anderson, would do something on Broadway--but back to the film.

The soundtrack largely consists of David Bowie songs performed in Portugese, so that should give you some clue if this is your style.  As always Anderson assembles a great cast.  I really thought Bill Murray's performance was great and Cate Blanchett does a good job with her somewhat thinly written part.  As always there are some great touches, like one scene where a cutaway model of the ship is shown and the actual ship set, which is a scaled up verion of the cutaway model.

I was sort of puzzled by Anderson killing off Owen Wilson's character.  I'm not sure what dramatic purpose was served and I think the film would have had a stronger finish without his death.  But still, the ending was pretty good and because of the nature of the film, you just sort of shrug your shoulders at every new turn.

Spoiler Below...

Was it just me, or was that shot, after the helicopter crash, one of the coolest things you have ever seen? Owen and Murray are wading in the water and that line of blood runs down the top of the camera, and then the camera dips a bit to reveal the ocean around them is turning red.

Very awesome...kind of like a certain scene in the Royal Tenenbaums(remember?), which was another of my favs of all time.

I liked the movie. Not as good as RT and Rushmore, but way better then BR.

Re: The Life Aquatic

SPOILER........

As far as Owen Wilson's death in the movie. I think thats how it needed to be ended. Reason well he puts so much emphasis on us thinking that he is his son. But then this is interrupted when we are told that Bill "shoots blanks". So his death actually adds to it and should be the ending. We are left uncertain, but he is dead so we are not thinking about if he is really his son but rather that he died and he and Bill actually had a father son realtionship. Maybe thats what changes Bill, and allows him to have better relationships with other ppl. I understand this isn't a concrete argument but just what i thought. Good movie though.

Re: The Life Aquatic

I liked it, but I liked rushmore and royal tenenbaums much bette..

I felt life aquatic was a little slow. But those action sequences were hilarious

Re: The Life Aquatic

No kidding. I thought the action sequences were going to be a dream or something. But nope, they really happened! :o

Re: The Life Aquatic

lol, not much to this thread if you skip the spoilers like me.

I hated Tenenbaums... Sry, but it totally feels like "weird for the sake of being weird" can't explaing it, but i got depressed just watching it. I know everyones just going to tell me i didnt get it, and it may be true, but i still think its a sub par movie.

And unfortunatly this is coming from a guy who thinks Rushmore is one of the best films ever! I was able to see at on the big screen a few months back as a midnight movie and even though i'd seen it many times before, its wide screen majesty simply overwelmed me, I actually got pretty emotional at the end.

After hearing everyone tell me Aquatic isnt as good as tenenbaums, im getting really scared...

Re: The Life Aquatic

No tech specs on imdb, but I'm guessing it's 35mm. The stop-motion creatures were shot with 35mm: http://www.uemedia.net/CPC/vfxpro/printer_11044.shtml

I agree with everyone else -- it was good, but not great.

Murray is very watchable, and Zissou is a great character. "I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it." However, none of the other characters popped for me. (Where was Luke Wilson?)

I think the story was pretty thin besides the Costeau parody, although Anderson's continues to explore the definition of family as a theme, and father/father-figures in particular (not really BR, but deifinitely Rushmore, RT, and now LA). Personally, a straight parody of Costeau that was 20 minutes long would have been enough for me.

My favorite aspect was the Portuguese translations of the David Bowie songs on the classical acoustic.

Re: The Life Aquatic

It was good, Rushmore and Tenenbaums DEFINITELY beat it out though.

Murray was great, Dafoe was the most hilarious part of the whole thing. So was the abusing of the interns.

Re: The Life Aquatic

i thought it was better than tenanbaums, but just as good as rushmore. i frikkin loved this movie!! the sets were amazing!

Re: The Life Aquatic

The sets were definitely amazing. I keep thinking about the sets and color pallete of the film. Some really creative stuff.
