The Last Airbender - M. Night's latest

I'm not a great fan of naruto in terms of animation. its mostly consists of characters talking with their mouth covered, lots of hold/still frame, cycling animation, etc. etc.

Uh, Naruto is really bad. Furthemore, after the first 50 to 80 episodes the animation went straight to hell. In the beginning, not only was the CONTENT stellar but the animation in most of the episodes was insane.

But, take something like Fullmetal or Eureka7? Compare that animation to The Last Airbender... there's NO comparison. There are times, even in the new Fullmetal Series brotherhood, when the Animation of a single episode eclipses that of OVAs.

I can't agree that Avatar's animation is anywhere near real quality anime cel.

It's his brain saying "I'm with stupid...?"

All the race-stuff is a little bit much when you consider that one of the hallmarks of anime character design is big huge rounded eyes that are non only distinctly un-asian but in fact too big to comfortably fit into *anybody's* skull no matter what "race" they are.

It wildly varies. Vash the Stampede is clearly Caucasian, Edward and Alphonse Elric are clearly Caucasian, the list goes on. However, Ta-kun (Furi-Kuri/FLCL) was Japanese, so is Shinji Ikari (Evangelion) and the entire cast of Boogiepop Phantom.

It's all over the map, naturally dependent on story.

Still, the race-issue is pretty silly to bring up... Avatar in general is just westernized good guy versus bad guy muck. There aren't any layers to be considered, where-as with a Mech-and-Love Anime such as Eureka7, on up from nearly the first episode you wipe the predisposition of good vs bad by the fifth episode.

There's one episode where Renton Thurston destroys another Mech, stomps on its head and when his on Niruvashu (Nirvash - Mech) raises its metallic foot, there's a severed, bloody human arm hanging from the bottom with a wedding ring on it. To which the fourteen year old mech pilot comes to the terrible realization that he's been killing people (bad guys) this entire time. He goes into a Berserk state and becomes depressed for a number of episodes.

You aren't getting that in THE LAST AIRBENDER...

Anyway, back to the Americanized topic: citing Eureka7 again, there's a HEAP of Western influence. Two of the characters are named Ray and Charles Beam, a direct homage to Ray Charles. A lot of the episode names are direct references to American culture, especially music. So, it really has nothing to do with that...

Man I wish someone would do a good fist of the northstar film. That is still the most violent anime I have ever seen. But I don't know too much about the artform. I know akira, appleseed, vampire hunter D and not many more.

Avatar better be good. I loved the nick version.

I like the overall look of this, but it does seem a little "americanized" to me.

I'm a big M Night fan, I even liked The Happening, so I'm gonna see this one for sure.

Naruto!

Naruto!

Naruto is really awful. A joke in animation. I could've done better and I draw like a five year old child.

I would disagree. Indeed some anime animation looks better but their both done in different style, mood and treatment. its not good comparing them.

for me avatar's animation is great as most of them are based on real life martial arts form andit may not look as fancy but its still a hand ful work to do

race issue wise
im completely against changing the characters to caucasian and even on their casting on zuko
its not about an issue about them being racists. its an issue about the art and being loyal to the original animation . so you can call my disapproval a personal taste.

Here's a youtube version, if anyone else besides me can't see that quicktime one.

I've no idea whether this will be good or bad, but I'm glad Shyamalan is finally doing something different. I wish someone else had written the script though.

Looks like it'll suck. That backflip shot though of that guy freezing was really awesome...that crackling sound effect of the ice was sweet as well. Looks like it'll just be a big loud and awesome movie to watch...but the acting looks poor. Feels like M Night might have gone all Michael Bay on us...

I really hope you're not right. :embarasse

Haven't seen the film, but have watched the series for years with my kids. If the movie is like the trailer, Hollywood is getting it wrong (again). What makes the series work is the vulnerability and relationships of the characters. I care about these characters and their journey. The bending and battles are fun, but it's smoke and mirrors to move you from one part of their quest to another. It is not the focus of the story.

It does kind of bug me that they seem to have Americanized it, but if it were a good story, with characters i gave a crap about (and seemed to give a crap about each other), I'd bite.

I doubt that will be the case.

My favorite quotes from RT reviews:

The most well-rounded failure of the year so far.

A soul-crushing disaster made worse by unnecessary, counterproductive 3-D, The Last Airbender fails to immediately qualify as the worst film of the summer only by virtue of the year's abundance of other candidates.

The good news for those eagerly anticipating this live-action, big budget adaptation is that the 3D isn't horrible. The bad news? Just about everything else is.

I believe M. Night can ruin the world.

Even in 3D, [it's] one-dimensional.

a staid, interminable miscalculation

AirBender Sucked!

AirBender Sucked!

I had to bend some air after seeing that crap :Drogar-KnockedOut(D
Liked the water effects though.

Uh oh, reviews are not good, downright terrible. Not that it matters, it will still have a solid opening just based on the popularity of the show--

If you thought the T O M A T O M E T E R rating for this is dire, check out the blurb from the AICN review -- http://www.aintitcool.com/node/45640

"... M. Night Shyamalan's THE LAST AIRBENDER is a hate crime against those who love movies!!!!"

Bear in mind I don't like to necessarily let reviews decide which movies I see, but still, this doesn't bode well at all. It's even gotten worse ratings than Jonah Hex .
