the jokey short film

we see this again and again in amateur filmmaking: waiting for a punchline that takes forever to get to and when it finally arrives falls flat because the humor is one dimensional, childish or silly.

Humor should come, if at all, naturally, out of strong character development. Dont shove it in our faces or make us wait the length of your five minute short for your punchline. It's like, "hi, Im the director of this film and I have a simple joke to tell you"

anyways, I see this a lot, and it bugs the hell out of me

I totally agree. I also feel the same way about the shorts with the "twist" endings but everybody seems to love those.

I would think that making a 10-15 minute short would be a lot harder than making a 20-30 minute short.

Constructing in 15 minutes or less something someone will actually care about or be able to take anything away from has to be incredibly difficult.

Haha, adult swim isn't a great reference for cohesive, intelligent storytelling. Their shows are just 15 mins of strange. But still hilarious and fun to watch.
