The Joker - and my new avatar

But, we dont know in what context this pic was taken. Maybe he does have the permanent grin. And let's reshift our thinking about this. He does have a "permanent" grin if you look at the scars on the sides of his mouth.

I love it. Oh, and Heath Ledger is an incredible actor IMO. He should've won Best Actor for Brokeback. There, I said it.

Though I agree it's not the same old Joker, I like that. I think the new Joker looks cool. I never used to read the comics, so I don't really appreciate authenticity on this one.

Yeah, and I'd like to reiterate what someone said before. We already got the "classic" teeth baring, goofy, grinning joker with Jack Nicholson. Why would we want to see that again?

I respect that they're doing something new with it. The Batman movie's are not the Batman comic books, and I think Nolan is making strong artistic decisions that work best in his medium. Comic book dogma confuses me sometimes. I guarantee this Joker will not disappoint. You can quote me on that.

That pretty much strikes me as saying that we got the whole "bat" motif before -- why not try something new? The reason everyone else has done a grinning Joker is because that's what the Joker is. It's a matter of staying true to the character. If you want to go in "new" directions, then do it with a new or different character.

One of the reasons the Nolan movie was so well-received was because it was MORE faithful to the comic than the Burton movie was.

I've really never understood why people bring highly-popular characters to the screen, change them drastically -- and then be utterly stunned when the reaction to it is negative.

I thought the scarecrow in Batman begins was awesome. But I like heath ledger. hes a good actor. hes just cursed, because hes been pegged "pretty boy" and most likely is offered roles that kinda suck. but given the oppertunity, he does good work. i though he was good in brokeback too. Lets see wht he does with this.

I absolutely agree. I think the "pretty boy" actors get a bad rep because of their looks, or maybe a bad movie or two. Same thing with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, etc.

Also, I checked this movie out on imdb. Looks like Maggie Gyllenhaal is playing Katie Holmes' role from the first film. I'm actually glad, I like Maggie Gyllenhaal way more than Katie Holmes. I'm also glad the movie doesn't have "Batman" in the title. it was getting pretty old. The Dark Knight is a great title.

EDIT: Timur beat me to it as I was typing my reply.

I think you're missing my point. I don't want to see an actor do their best impression of Jack Nicholson playing Jack Nicholson playing the Joker. I like that there making it edgier (at least it looks that way).

The Dark Knight is actually the name of part of the Batman series where he and Superman get into a pretty heavy fight. I wish they'd make THAT movie. Its one thing I like better about the comic books. The heros have more flaws.

Now, Heath Ledger is a good actor. Very good. He's not right for the joker though. I'm just afraid that to compensate he might wind up over doing it and going over the top. When Jack did it, it was great. He has the right personality for it. But Heath...ehh, I'm not too sure.

Heck, I even think someone like Vince Vaughn would even be better.

Who said anything about Jack Nicholson? Whoever plays him, part of the Joker's character (and I mean, part of his CHARACTER, not just his appearance) is the grin.

Played correctly, it's far scarier than this John Wayne Gacy getup.

We can't really say much since the movie won't be out for about 14 more months. But a truely great actor can play anything. So we'll see how Heath does. I think he's going to do a great job.

me too. i thin kwere going to be surprised. you never know what magic he created in the casting session......

I have to disagree with you on this. Casting is everything. Just because you're brilliant it doesn't mean you are right for the part. Can you picture Tom Hanks starring as Bram Strokers Dracula?

Having said that, I'm not saying Heath L. is going to suck. A lot of it depends on the script and where it takes him. In fact, I know he won't suck. He can't. He's very good. I think he will either just be wrong for the part or surprise the hell out of me.

But Tom Hanks isn't that great of an actor. Look at Gary Oldman in the previous Batman. I didn't even realize he played Gordon until the credits. I almost never recognize him, which is why he's one of my favorite actors of all time. Not saying that Heath is as great as Oldman, per se, but after seeing Brokeback Mountain (which I just barely saw recently) I think he could be in the next generation of actors in that kind of class.

Meh, Batman Begins was incredibly lame and boring IMO, anyway.

And what frickin' genius cast Tom Wilkinson as an overacting Italian mobster??? Were they serious with that?

The whole thing seemed really shoddy to me, considering how everyone built it up.

So I have no real hopes for this movie anyway.

But man, when I was googling for joker pics, look at this badboy I found:

Yeeeeeikes!!!

Heath Ledger with badmake-up looks downright angelic next to this crazy son of a *****...

I couldn't see Michael Keaton as Batman either, but he worked rather well. Of course, the story was crap, but he was rather believable... ish.
