The Island

My only issue with the product placement in The Island is that it's badly done.

#1. They have Aquafina on tap (irony there ;) )... but only is it on tap, but the logo is identical to the current logo.
#2. They're playing Xbox. Not Xbox256, Not Xbox revolution, but "Xbox" with the exact logo Xbox has now.
#3. There's an MSN booth... with the same freaking butterfly.

I said I didn't mind the product placement as much, but I hear ya Spiff. I thought the same thing... Even the Apple cinema displays. So they haven't changed in 15 years?

And I completely forgot about the Xbox scene. THAT is the perfect example of pure marketing in the film (and maybe why I blocked it out). What, if anything did it have with the development of the character, the plot line, or anything? Weird. That scene did nothing for the movie itself (it wasn't even winked at later on, like hey, watch out, this girl can fight). Nothing.

Hmm. Maybe I need to rethink this. At least Minority Report handled it in a smart way, not just sneaky advertising for budget supplementing.

I'm usually a fan (or at the very least, accepting) of real life products in flicks, simply because it grounds it somewhat in reality. I could see walking around L.A. and then stumbling across an MSN "phone" booth. Or the Reebok sign with Michael Clarke Duncan on it.

But inside the facility, it makes no sense. Why would these people who've allegedly been saved from "contamination" have brand new Puma sneakers, or Speedo swimsuits? These people have no reason to believe that their saviors are still producing XBox consoles.

And it doesn't compute from the company's perspective either, given their unique interpretation to the law. Companies wouldn't know they were sponsoring Merrick's insurance company thing.

Still, Bay knows how to make a fun flick and shoot it in a unique, stylish fashion, so I will continue to go to his films when I feel like watching something without having to think much about it.

I thought the funniest part was that "The Island" opened in 4th place with a whopping 12.1 mil (est.)

I think someone is fired...

I think this a very good film... the film of the year. nice shots (except one, when it was unsharp for a half second), wonderful 5.1 sounds, really, really good actors (I mean S.J.), and a good story. this is the 1st film in the year, which hold my attention from the beginning to the end.
visual effects are really cool

well, advertisements? the xbox does not fit because that kind of institution has an own software system, but the other ads areacceptable

I was pleasantly surprised too!

I think it is a very good, but flawed film.

I found a few elements distracting:

• As mentioned, the product placement
• As mentioned a few out of focus shots
• The strange advances in some technologies (like micro insect sensors that crawl in your eye) compared to stand still in others - like cars and the Xbox logo!
• A few aspects of the feasibility of the "clone factory."
• The sex scene was...just a bit false... hey, maybe I was just jealous of Ewan!
• The bounty-hunter's moral U-turn...."err hang on, weren't you just machine-gunning police a minute ago?"

However, I thought the pace was very good - something Bay has certainly mastered. His films may be crappy or lame, but I rarely get bored watching them. Scarlett Johansson is fantastic too!

I think another director could have done the film more justice by treating it as a Sci-Fi thriller, not a Michael Bay "this has car chases and explosions, right!?"

Forgot to say, I think that the film has struggled at the box office because it is very hard to sell. I certainly wouldn't want to have to cut the trailer for it!

I don't think the sex scene was false. It was enough, because this is not a comedy or a sex film!?!

I could understand how they discovered their natural instinct to have sex... but to french kiss??? That was a bit cheesy IMO... I have to say that if you were educated as they had been, sex would seem a very weird idea wouldn't it. I can understand the attraction though... especially to Scarlett...

of, course, but they have already touched each other in the institution.
they are just developing

Yeah, I can understand their attraction to each other, and think it is good for the film to show their instincts coming through, despite their "education." However, I don't think french kissing is very instinctive - I actually remember trying to figure it all out aged 11 after watching James Bond films . However they haven't been exposed to such things.

My point is that there are a few things in the film that they learn due to "instinct" which are actually a result of culture - a culture they have not been exposed to. It felt like the filmmakers hadn't quite thought it through... too busy planning unnecessary car chases

you are right. well, when I was watching that scene, I didn't think of the kiss. but that is my fault.
anyway the sound and the music is very cool. I have not heard such good surround foy 3 years.

well I think it was not shot with digital camera, was it?

That bit...

Or were you just starting a new topic of conversation?

If so, I think it was shot on 35 mm film. :)

ye :) I tryed to start a new conversation. but please continue what you have been talking about, if you want to say something.

Oh no, sorry, I thought you had just mis-posted, that was all :)

I thought it looked pretty good, whatever it was they shot it on. I say 35 mm because there were no signs that it was HD, like blown highlights.

there are some shots about the "Island" in the fisrt fex minutes. shots about the coast. what kind ofn aeroplane has been used?

My guess is that they would use a helicopter with a gyroscopically stabilised camera mount.

There is a shot where it actually flies through a rock arch isn't there!? That is some stunt of a shot!
