The "Illusionist" Movie Filter

1. Does anyone know in FCP what filter I could use to get the soft black tint around the picture like in the movie the Illusionist?

2. Also, I have noticed that in the short film contest I have been in that production value (making your film look fancy by way of filters) has gotten some very poor films in the top 3. Are there any particular filters that you have noticed in FCP that help to make your work look more professional?

Thanks.

Magic Bullet editors Black difusion, Misfire Vignette. While its way overused, Magic Bullet is a good start to obtain certain looks. Just make sure you understand what its doing to your footage, and don't be affraid to mess with the individual parameters.

Just to be clear. If you are looking to do well in festivals, there is no magic bullet (small m, small b). It takes a good story, good acting and a lot of hard work.

I know of few if any decent film festivals that promote movies due to their use of fancy filters.

I don't think I said that a filter alone would win a festival. If that is what you took from what I wrote I am sorry, that is not what I was getting at. Did you watch the film I mentioned above "Side Show", clearly no great story, no great acting, and for a horror festival the film had zero scares. However, it did have a nice filter on it that none of the other entries had, and talking to the judges after the showing they mentioned that it made the film stand out.
