The Human Surge premiered at Locarno (one of my favorite fastivals), this year.

Argentinian filmmaker Eduardo William's first feature, it is very bold. Formally and conceptually. It uses a very amateur camera style in favor of more expensive or polished camera tricks...which can rub a lot of people the wrong way. But if you settle into the film without any expectations, it is quite piercing and allows you a view into the world of young people and the mundane in three different countries in an intimate and sometimes awkward way. It reminded me somewhat of the strategy Sadie Benning used in some of her pixel-vision films.

I only saw a screener, so not in theaters. But I recommend it if you are open to, or interested in, more experimental approaches to cinema, and the ways it can place or displace the viewer psycologically and emotionally. And while I will admit it lacks in narrative prowess, it makes me curious about what he will do in the future.
