The Hobbit in HFR

I embrace new technology, but I just thought it looked terrible.

I think different people are sensitive to different aspects of moving images. For example, I've never been bothered by CGI movement, but my girlfriend is and she thought the CGI movement in HFR was much better.

But for me, this video/soap opera look was just distracting and I thought it made what should have been a beatiful movie look cheap and kind of ugly it was just so sharp, edgy, contrasty, just not the beautiful soft creamy look that I really liked in the Lord of the Rings movies. I would not see the next installment in HFR. I would go see the 24fps version.

I saw this in 24p 2D, and I have to say that the movie in general just looks oversharp and contrasty. I don't think it's a problem with 48fps, I think it's a problem with production design and cinematography. Definitely looks like it was shot on a RED. The good thing is, whatever process they used to convert this to 2D didn't really produce any significant motion artifacting. There WAS one shot where they do a really fast pan and that was a blurry mess, but I'd imagine that at double the frame rate that shot will look fine.

I'll be seeing this in 48fps 3D this weekend - I'll have a more complete view then.
