The Hitcher

I just saw this last night on Channel 4(UK) for the first time - man this was amazing. One of the scariest movies i have seen for ages. Rutger Huaer is amazing. What do you all think of this??

John Ryder: Gas stations have cigarettes.
Jim Halsey: What about gas?
John Ryder: I don't need gas.
Jim Halsey: What do you want?
Jim Halsey: What's so funny?
John Ryder: [Stops Laughing] That's what the other guy said.
Jim Halsey: What other guy?
John Ryder: That guy back there, the one we just passed. The guy who picked me up before you did.
Jim Halsey: That was him in there?
John Ryder: Sure it was. He couldn't have walked very far.
Jim Halsey: Why's that?
John Ryder: Because I cut off his legs... and his arms... and his Head. And I'm going to do the same to you.

One of my favorite weird movies. Armin Shimerman (Quark from DS9) was a police interrogator. Rutger Hauer is now slated for 99 productions (finish them and one more for the c-note). Also back in '87, Hauer shoved a grenade in Gene Simmons (kiss) mouth and pulled the pin in "Wanted Dead or Alive"

Nick Randall: **** the bonus.

man i played in a movie called Blast and RUTGER Hauer is the lead and i never met him. i played the days he wasn't there

While I kinda liked the flick, it's one of those movies that bothers me. How can Hauer be everywhere? It's worse than a slasher flick in that sense.

Yea its plotwise unlogical with hauers character. But suspense wise its a fantastic.

You can run but you cant hide.

I always found it kinda average in all respects, and downright silly plotwise at times. I never really got into this one. i was shocked they were even bothering to remake it.

They are re-making it. Yeah i agree with some of you it does seem illogical. There's much that doesn't make sense, but that's the beauty of it. There's something supernatural about Hauers characters, there are many instances to which point this out. Hauer in the DVD commentary says that he sees JOhn Ryder as a phantom or demon haunting the highways. Or he could just be a looney. Nevertheless it's a good movie.

The Hitcher is a great flick. I remember the contraversy when it was released. People were hysterical over the "graphic" violence. I think critics said it was one of the most violent (if not the most violent) films ever produced. They condemned it. But there is hardly any violence in the movie. Much of it is off-screen. Similar complaints were made of Reservoir Dogs. People thought they say the ear cut off, among other things. That just shows what great films they are.

I think I liked it more back when it came out.

If you want to see a good Rutger movie, check out Turkish Delight. He's freakin' hilarious in it (I won't spoil a few key scenes). It's one of Paul Verhoeven's [sic] earlier works.
Dated but funny...

Loved "The Hitcher". Looking forward to the remake as well. i stunt doubled Rutger in Brazil in 2002 on a horrible movie entitled "Flying Virus".

Totally Kool. Rutger is one of my favorite actors. I have many of his movies on DVD but still need to get many more.

(Not looking forward to them remaking The Hitcher though as I like it the way it is.)

What was interesting was this: They wanted me to direct Rutger on a second unit while he was being chased through the jungle by bees. Well as you might know, directing an actor on second unit is a no no. I went ahead and made up a shot list of things that needed to be shot between his coverage and mine while doubling him. I got called down to the restaurant in the hotel the night before the scheduled shoot.
I went down and met with Rutger, the UPM and the director to see what the haps were.
Rutger looked at me (not unfriendly) then to the director and the upm and said "an actor of my stature, is never directed by the second unit director". Uh oh! The director and the upm said "no problem". "We will re-arrange the shooting days for this to happen." After Rutger left, the upm said: "you are going to shoot this chase anyway, do what you need to do to get this done".
I went out and shot a full second unit directing myself for a chase as Rutger's double being chased by bees through the jungle.
Two days later we went out to shoot the same scene for coverage with Rutger. He said , "I never would take my glasses off, even when attacked by crocodiles". Of course there were only one pair of glasses (his) in the movie. We could only use the shots where my face was totally covered or turned away. Which precluded a great croc attack. Oh well, he's the star, and he wasn't nasty, just doing what he was supposed to do.
