The Hierarchy of Audio Gear

This is easy:

Most important piece of gear are your EXPERIENCED EARS. Least important tool is everything else.

It's a loaded question because every bit depends on several other things... if a guy buys the most expensive shotgun and crap mount or windscreen then he's still got nothing.

An audio kit is like a machine of many parts... let's say it's like a racecar... and people are always asking what single component of a car they can buy to win... some people say the engine or tires... but really when it comes down to it you need the whole car and all Jeremy is saying that the most important part will always be the driver.

What I'm saying is that it's better to buy the entire car and accept it for it's limitations until you can afford a better total car... rather then think you can buy a single component of the best and expect to be in the class of the best.

For a given budget the first place I'd spend is the mic, but with total consideration for the screen and mount... and decent headphones.
