Regardless of the nature of the film it is awesome that Tarantino is attempting to revive 70mm but the realist in me says that such is folly, albeit noble and valiant folly. Good thing for 70mm fans that Tarantino, like his films, isn't realistic.
I had a meeting with the Senior Technical Sales Rep with Arri yesterday and we got talking about the Alexa 65. When Arri approached the large rental houses and presented them the idea of the 65mm camera they all shrugged away (due to the high cost, since its not just the camera but lenses, support gear...etc). Thats why Arri decided to rent them out exclusively through their own services and produced 35 cameras.
Now it turns out 35 is not enough, market demand is exceeding their expectations. So who knows what the future will hold, but I agree return of 70mm to mainstream use sounds improbable.
