The Great Raid will Suck

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
The Great Raid

I'm already bummed out about this. This is one of the more fascinating event's of World War 2 and the PTO and why does it scream 'Big Budget Turner Television Network' production?

Directed by John Dahl who has really done nothing and the only interesting casting choice is Connie Nielsen (who is smoking hot).

The budget was apparently $80 Million. $80 Million? And this is what they've come up with? Why does this not smell at all like a Classic War Epic?

Saving Private Ryan was shot for $70 million
The Thin Red Line for $52 million
Enemy at the Gates for $68 million
We Were Soldiers for $75 million

Why can I already tell that this GREAT RAID is going to suck ? What a let-down and what an injustice to the men who are portayed in this film. This film shoud be a classic and one to remember and instead it's going to be a DVD Saturday Night Special

My .02 and prediction

Edit

No ****ing wonder; the company responsible (village Roadshow) have done these cinematic masterpieces over the last few years:

Police Academy
The Dukes of Hazzard
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
House of Wax
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
Constantine
Cats & Dogs 2: Tinkles' Revenge
Ocean's Twelve
Catwoman
Envy
Taking Lives
Torque
The Matrix Revolutions
Mystic River - The Lone Exception
The Matrix Reloaded
Dreamcatcher
"Power Rangers Ninja Storm"
Darkness Falls
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Two Weeks Notice
Analyze That
Ghost Ship - I actually enjoyed this campy ass film; but I love campy ass horror
The Adventures of Pluto Nash
Eight Legged Freaks
Queen of the Damned

I can't say a lot, but I saw the movie a long time ago. I am talking like years ago. It had some major problems. I have no idea what to expect from it now, but I don't expect much.

That said, I have been surprised before. Editing and re-shoots can save a movie.

Yes. I actually thought they just shelved the project because it never came out. I have not seen the trailer yet, so up until now I had no idea it was actually going to be released.

Saw the poster, thought "yey!"

Saw the trailer thought "ney!"

Thought it looked like a pile of proverbial poop.

Yeah; what a waste of $80 Million. And Ben Bratt, James Franco and Joe Fiennes in the leads? Come on man.

Bonnie Timmermann is one of the three listed casting directors and Im surpised cause she has a killer credit line.

To think this is something I wanted to do one day too. :/

John, say what you will about Village Roadshow; Power Rangers Ninja Storm is one of the greatest master pieces ever commited to celluloid.

I saw the real documentary about the rescue on Discovery. It's an amazing story, common sense would say that it would make a GREAT MOVIE.

Then... it goes through the Hollywood studio system.....

I'm keeping a "wait-and-see" attitude about this one. Still hugely dissapointed with "Windtalkers."
(My dad quit highschool and joined the marines at age 16. Fought in first line assaults in most all of the south Pacific islands. What little he would talk about was pretty insane. So I've been waiting for some good stories to come out of that era).

The Pacific War project that Spielberg is "involved with" like Band of Brothers should be pretty good... I hope...

Pacific War doesn't seem to sell as well as war on the western front, that may be why there is less made about it nowdays.

Hey
Spielberg is also producing a movie that Eastwood is directing called Flags of our Fathers. I just watched the trailer for great raid and wasnt too impressed. It felt like Vietnam war for some reason. Something is off about it. Hopefully they will at least get the main parts of the story correct.

The Pacific War is a reason I am will be getting HBO at that time and Clint doing Flags of our Fathers should be unreal. I a mlooking foward to those two.

The Great Raid looks cheap is what it looks; cheap and glossy with a TNT vibe. These kinds of stories demand a 'trench approach' to the filmmakers I believe; not a classical approach.

The worst is when it looks like someone said "hold on shouldn't we shake the camera around a bit now so that it looks like Private Ryan" and it just doesn't fit the style of the film at all.

What did people think of U571? I think that pulled off the classical style quite well. It is unpopular in the UK for portraying the Americans as the ones who stole the Enigma. The actually event was particularly exciting from what I have read, but I enjoyed the film.

I can't remember the general sentiment of U571 here in the States. We saw it in the theatre and I remember walking out thinking "Eh; not great, not bad but definatley not big screen. Again with the TNT Big Budget."

Let's see; It did $77,122,415 Domestic which isn't that good; again, not good - not great.

When you have Jon Bon Jovi showing up in it you know it's probally not too cool and the fact it was indeed a fantasy takes the weight out of it

Hey
I just watched a making of on FX. They had Dale working on it and he put them through the boot camp as well. They were doing the usual whining about how hard it was. It seems like the actors really tried to do research for their roles and fiennes lost a bunch of weight for it as well. I think it might tell the story but it wont be a movie that is spectacular or ground breaking. I just saw some of the raid footage and it looks like modern mililtary in the way the guys are moving and doing things. I think the problem with dale is that he comes from a different era than most of the movies he works on. Some of the veterans that I talk to didnt like SPR because of the attitudes of the men in the squad. This group of guys had been through several campaigns together and wouldnt have been at eachothers throats the whole time. Anyway, I cant wait to make my war film as soon as I get a script.

I don't think that Dale Dye had much to do with the SPR, which I think is the cause of the complaints. I saw him on a "Making of doc" for "Last of the Mohicians" and he had really done his research. The battles scenes in LOM were great. But you can't overcome a poor script with a two week bootcamp. Just hope that this is not the case with Greatest Raid. I will probably check it out as a rental though.

BTW, I see that you are in Richmond. I've shot two projects at the abandoned Richmond Memorial Hospital. It is a cool town. Us Virginians need to stick together.

LOL Wadespencer99 !

Whats with these actors crying about boot camp? Its like 2 weeks. I did 2 months. My bro did 3 ! And then I had to go to sea for 3 months.

Bastids.

Pfftttttttttttttoooooooooooooyeeeeyyyyy !
