The Great Gatsby.

You gotta wonder what kind of fool thinks that music actually works for any of this.
That beat track totally ruins the possibility of connecting with the visual.

Beyond that they're trying to make it look like cave men acted like they roller blade.

Being true to the period and the mind set of the people from that period seems to be something beyond who ever is producing this,
but then again, they're probably just trying to sell the schtick, and have no artistic sensibility at all.

The new music is still way off track and only very slightly less annoying.

I like Luhrmann's 'divergence' from absolute periodism, such as "Moulin Rouge!"(2001). So, I'll probably like this film, based on that alone...

Yea. I thought of "Moulin Rouge" when looking a this, but what we had there was some great music and singing.
I see the parallel.

Ah. I'm just dyslexic enough to have specifically seen it as "Zie." I even looked at it carefully.

I have the same problem with 'ie' vs. 'ei'. When I 'know' I'm reading German.. I pronounce things correctly in my head, but in English... I have to think about it... and often choose unwisely...

Anyway I saw the film and liked it. I definitely got 'through it', which is better than my various attempts to read the book...

After 700,000 Russians got to see it, (?) it opened here May 30 and we finally did yesterday. It's showing on multiple screens here in 3D and 2D.
I thought we should try 3D first because that's my room number.

So my wife and I headed out to a Super Screen cinema for the 3.30pm show. At the box office both 3D showings were totally booked out for last night ..
but not many for our showing, so we got seats R14+15 in the middle 3/4 way back. I can't imagine anyone coping in A1 or A30.

Interestingly, at the start 1/2way through screening the adverts, they tell you to put on your glasses for the 3D ads. And this where you see
all weird/wild and wonderful 3D effects. The best are the more A class products who can afford it, the worst are just bad.

To the main feature. It might be easy for you guys, but this is where it took me years to be able to watch a movie in a theatre, wearing 2 hats.
The first one just to enjoy it, the 2nd to watch it in some detail.

So I wore both and did enjoy it, it's Baz Luhrmann's vision of The Great Gatsby and 2 things, most everyone knows the finale, and Mr. Luhrmann
has the reputation to deliver.

And that he does, the cast revel in their characters and Baz creatively packs it up all around them. The images are wonderful.

It's the best judicious use of 3D effects yet, clever not overdone accentuating Catherine Martin's costumes which imo, will get an Oscar.
I understand they toned the rock music down and the result morphs well into the 20s styles. And last week the soundtrack went into the US Billboard charts
at No. 2. My only criticism might be, the last confrontation scene in the hotel ran a tad to long.

Australia's population is now just on 23 million and it looks like we're all in the credits. When one of us stands up make a creative show like that, we all stand up.

And all the guys at Red will be very happy to put this movie on their CV. Yep Baz certainly knows how to balance things ...

Cheers.

Saw it tonight. Hated the 3D, which I find so crude and cartoonish. ( same for almost every 3D movie, with the exception of the Pixar animated 3D films )

For the first half of the film I felt like the camera work belonged in a Harry Potter film, with over-done CGI effects and a camera that kept jumping around like an over-caffeinated squirrel to an implausible music score.

But, everything settles down in the second half which I quite enjoyed. The camera moves normalized, the music supported the mood.

I almost wish I could have come in at the half-way mark, as I think I would have enjoyed the whole experience a lot more if I could have skipped the first half of the movie.

So I watched in 2D - refuse 3D when I want to watch a story. Enjoyed the experience. The subtleties in the acting is what did it most for me and I could still see all those little moments with all the fanfare and flair going on around them. Costume was outstanding. If you're in Art department I'd be running to see this film.

From the Vimeo caption ..

'My name is Chris Godfrey and I was the VFX supervisor on the film.

Baz has graciously agreed to let us release this 'before and afters' reel to show our peer group the VFX work completed on his film 'The Great Gatsby'.
While this specific reel was the work of Animal Logic (as my primary vendor), in total I worked with 7 vendors including Animal Logic, Rising Sun and Iloura
in Australia, ILM in San Francisco and also Prime Focus and Method Vancouver. We also ran an amazing internal SWAT team that completed over 400 shots. Congratulations to all who did such fabulous work on almost 1500 shots.

Many thanks to Baz, CM, Catherine Knapman, Chris DeFaria and Mark Brown - and of course Prue Fletcher and Joyce Cox.'

Cheers all.
