The Great Gatsby.

As it was shot locally, I'm interested in the fortunes of this newest Great Gatsby. Originally scheduled for this Dec., it's now been put back to a US summer release to avoid the Xmas crush, tho one early rumour was to improve the visual look of it.

Translating F. Scott Fitzgeralds 1920 classic for the fourth time, in 3D with a rock score will be a very tough task, especially for the diehards.

Imo the 1974 version with Nelson Riddles brilliant Academy Award winning orchestral score will be hard to beat.

But hey, it's the 21st century, note the spelling mistake.

Cheers.

If I'm being honest- as much I poo-pooh 3D as an ancient curse that resurfaces on our little village every 30 years, only to be beaten back into magic recession by an unlikely hero, I am intrigued by the idea of peering inside Baz Luhrmann's mind (X 3). In spite of AUSTRALIA, I remain fascinated by him and his kaleidoscopic imaginings...

From my point of view, the pushback to summer only confirms what the trailer initially made me fear: this will be disappointing. The producers know that by releasing in summer they are drastically reducing Oscar chances, which tells me they don't think they have any Oscar hopes to begin with. It's a shame too, the film has a strong cast and Gatsby is a very strong source material.

I heard Warners sent it back to be polished. DiCaprio still hasn't developed a voice.

Much as I'd like the locals to win, a lot of the kids this version is aimed at have never heard of FScott or the Charleston.
Somehow it's not going to hold our eyeballs at gunpoint.

Cheers.

Or maybe it will. Trailer 2 is out, more punch etc. They've fixed the spelling mistake at 1.04.

Ran the whole thing through a spell checker.

Cheers.

Saw the trailer at the theater. Looks gorgeous.... and boring. But gorgeous! Love the look of this one, but the material looks dull. And yes, I have read the book.

I saw it in 2D and absolutely loved it. I don't think it could have been better cast and was well paced. I haven't read the book but I'm definitely going to now.

EDIT: My only issue was the song choices near the beginning - pulled me out of the world a little.

You gotta wonder what kind of fool thinks that music actually works for any of this.
That beat track totally ruins the possibility of connecting with the visual.

Beyond that they're trying to make it look like cave men acted like they roller blade.

Being true to the period and the mind set of the people from that period seems to be something beyond who ever is producing this,
but then again, they're probably just trying to sell the schtick, and have no artistic sensibility at all.

New trailer with new music:

The new music is still way off track and only very slightly less annoying.
