The Great Chroma Key Smackdown

HPX-170

Much easier to key.

Maybe I missed it, but what software is being used for the key?
Thanks

Did keylight in AE and blurred the edges a little. I tweaked keylight for a little bit but could make it better if I had to. Did a preset blur which made the white fabric blur a little too much at the edges. A custom would be better. Also for greenscreen I find it more difficult to get keys if they are shot at 24fps. The motion blur can be a problem. Higher frame rates converted back down to 24fps seems to work best. So that might cause a little bit of the edges on moving subjects to become lost.

Barry, what resolution and frame rate was the HMC150 footage recorded in?

Have you come up with any optimal camera settings for shooting green screen with the HMC150?

1080/24p.

No, I haven't even tried greenscreening with the 150, because I have a 170 and that's my go-to greenscreen camera... I think this test was the first time I put the 150 in front of a greenscreen. I believe the settings were identical between the 150 and the 170, so I'd be quite interested in seeing the results people come up with between the two.

Well, I will be shooting a nightmare of a green screen for a corporate client. (with my HMC150). It's their screen and I have to shoot it from less than 15 feet away due to a back wall. This should be fun.

Barry, I asked why they are not using a white screen (as per my PM) but they said they are not 100% that they will be using infinite white.

Well I do have till Tuesday to see if I can find a larger room. Anyways...

I'll try and post a short clip the resulting footage here if I am allowed to by the client.

Some additional shoots will be shot on an HVX200 in the same location/screen etc so I might be able to post a comparison of those two cams but no HPX170.

I just shot some footage of a half empty bottle of Dasani water being moved around, shook up, etc, as well as a crinkled up and empty ziploc bag (real nasty for keying!). I shot with the HPX170 on DVCPro50 and 1080/60i. Both keyed (AE w/keylight) unbelievably well.

Also, with fast motion of hands moving (creating alot of motion blur), those 2 modes performed well.

The only thing that seems to trip up either mode is thin black lines that are moving quickly (I used a thin black RCA cable and twirled it). This, I imagine, is due to the fact that motion blur with black tends to look (to the keyer) like a darker shade of the keying color. Oh well, we can't have everything...

I'm impressed with the keying I've seen in this thread. Great work, especially the subtle hair details.

man you guys find the most random stuff to put in the backgrounds.... lol

You mean like this?

Hmm.. mediafire timed out on me 25mb into the download of Barry's file and now won't let me download it at all. ahh.. technology.

Barry ,could you please tell me what kind of green screen you used ,i own the hmc 40 ,and im doing a shoot on thursday ,and i need to know what kind of screen to pick fast
also if you could give me any details on your lighting setup
thanks!

It's just some green fabric from B&H, I don't even remember the brand. Light is a row of home depot fluos across the top, and some cool lights 6-bank fluos down low, and levels set via waveform monitor.

She awoke to find her husbad (and their trailer) gone, with only that clothing rack, the "vaults" and her cat left for her.
