As a card-carrying IA member, I'll tell you that being in the union or on a union show doesn't actually protect you from many of the "abuses" we're discussing here.

It does, however, guarantee compensation when they do.

I hold a couple cards, too (IATSE West Coast Loc. 847, Loc. 800). Union rules do protect against a certain amount of abuse, because the producing entities want to avoid the kind of abuses for which they'll have to cut more and bigger checks. And, if they create conditions where I have to work past a certain number of hours, or put off a meal...well, they're paying fairly handsomely, for the privilege.
