The Flight that Fought Back

Anybody see this documentary on the Discovery Channel on September 11? It's about United Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11 and what they can gather actually happened onboard the flight from phone calls that were made and what is know about the cockpit voice recorder.

Great stuff. It was interesting, engaging, and heart-wrenching. It was shown without commercials. It is on my Tivo and will be transferred to computer for DVD archival (THANK YOU TIVOTOGO!) Anybody else see it?

I saw this. I was suprised by how well directed it was, and the interesting choices the director made. it definitely wasn't some by-the-numberes docu. The director had some artistic input. Anyway, did you hear how pretty soon you will not be able to keep TiVo recordings past a certain date. This is just the beginning. I'm sure it will get to a point where you will have to erase every show within 24 hours. man, i go off-topic quickly.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. It was great. I usually hate re-enactments in documentaries, but it was so well done that it was fine. I wonder what they shot on. I looked at the credits and their rental house was a video (not film) rental house.

I really hope the Tivo doesn't get too unmanageable, I can always burn the shows I really like to DVD though. But all of the new things they are adding are amazing. Not only can I listen to my mp3s and view my pictures, but I can check my Netflix queue. Manage and play podcasts. Not to mention the Netflix thing later this year where you can download your movies. I have a friend that works at Tivo. He can't tell me about anything, but he says there is something being announced soon that is going to completely change the way we watch television.

I don't believe any of that story. It was a great fabrication as was told to me privately by a person responsible for Air traffic that day for the east coast. Kind of like TWA800. Funny as the local papers at the time said that the plane was shot down and did not crash because witnesses saw that. At the time the Pennsylvania state police said debris from the crash has shown up about 8 miles away in a residential area where local media quoted some residents as seeing flaming debris from the sky. Residents and workers at businesses outside Shanksville, Somerset County, reported discovering clothing, books, papers and what appeared to be human remains. Some residents said they collected bags-full of items to be turned over to investigators. Others reported what appeared to be crash debris floating in Indian Lake, nearly six miles from the immediate crash scene. How a plane can crash into the ground and parts of it along with personal effects from it can be found floating from the sky eight miles away form the "crash" site is one great mystery. Great TV but pure conjecture to support a cause to go get those "terrorists". Hey anyone ever been able to make a cell phone call from a plane in the middle of the countryside at 25,000 feet moving at 400 mph? Try it!

And if you want to hear the actual tape of the pilots talking to the control tower:

i think the truth about that flight is that we'll never know what really happened. I mean sure someone says this and someone says that, but unless you were really there in the damn plane, or even then, you're just hearing it from, at best, a first hand source. and even those sources can skew the truth. remember they were saying that prisons were letting new orleans criminals free in the streets. how true did that turn out to be?

as far as the plane being shot down, it doesn't make much sense for the U.S. government to cover it up. They announced publicly that they would shoot down a plane if it posed a terrorist threat. And most Americans are okay with that (except, probably, for the ones on the plane). What's the point of covering up something you said you would do?

I think the saddest thing that came out of my viewing of that documentary, is that those people never found out what happened. What was going on. For all they knew there were dozens of planes being used to attack us. We have the gift of hindsight to know now that we are relatively safe. But to them, the U.S. was under attack. That's the last they knew. hmph. Very sad.

Walter--

I just read through your links, and I don't think I understand. They seem to be very contradictory. Some of them say the plane was shot down, while others say the plane was remotely controlled. I just don't see it. And I'm a JFK Conspiracy nut. Not that you're wrong, it's just that I dont' think anyone has put the facts together convincingly yet. I'm sure someone will write a book about it eventually though.

well I love aeroplane crash stories. I don't think they were going at 25000 and at 400 when they tryed to phone. but at lower a lower altitude they can use their mobile- at 3000F they can use it. (I tryed it with a glider, and the signal was very strong)

I suppose that someone will find the truth. it just usually takes him/her 7 years.
