"The Fiction" a DP blog

Hi all,
I didn't know where to place this but I'm off to Connecticut with Mike to DP a indy feature today for 6 weeks called "The Fiction" Written and Directed by Danny Dileo.
I'm hoping to update this each day after shooting with thoughts and things we did to solve problems we come across or just to show set ups. We are working on a very small budget so no big rentals or out of reach lighting schemes. We will be shooting on the HVX200 with 2 Brevis setups and Zeiss lenses.
EDIT:1-6-09
Trailer up.

Sounds fantastic. Try and get some good BTS photos so we can 'see' what you talk about!

Thanks!

P.S. Your avatar is driving me crazy!

So far all Aram's BTS shots are pics of me so dont get too excited. I suspect this will be a very boring blog.

Its been a long first 2 days and too tired to post anything but it was fun. We went from a giant 6+ million dollar mansion yesterday to a dusty ass broken down attic that was 110 degrees today. The attic turned out to be a challenge, it was a dark scene with one light source and some flash light stuff. Sounded easy until we started shooting. The one source light thing was easy but trying to simulate flashlight illumination and have a character lit enough to make it not seem lit was a *****. We needed to follow the flash light with a bigger light since it doesn't put out enough to get exposure but staying with the light and hide at the same time took a few takes. The single source shots I actually used 3 lights to simulate natural bounce and to add color to the darkness. I still have to dump everything and look at it but it looked good in both monitors. We have a break for a few days so tomorrow I will get screen shots. I didn't get that many pictures today since it was so hot up there it was hard to even think but yesterday I remembered to get a bunch.

Here are some screen shots from the shoot so far. Mike was dying from the heat and camera operating.

This wasn't too bad since it was near the source of motivation. I used a softbox above the light bulb to act like the bulbs fill and a 1k downstairs to simulate the hallway light.
I did hi-light his right side with a bit of blue just to give some wrap.

This is almost the same set up but I lit it from the right with a 1k soft and a 300 blue for hi-lights and bounce for slight fill of the forground

Same set up but you can see the light better. The light bulb in the back was still the motivation.

The flash light shots were a ***** because it had to look like spill from the flashlight but be bright enough to expose. I used a blue from the side just to lighten the shadows with color and a bounced 150k right in front that I moved around to match his movement.

This was motivated by both the flashlight and the light bulb. I moved the 1k below him to make the slight halo effect and bounced a 150 in the front with the blue 300 on the right.

I used a 150 and followed his light for these.

These shots were motivated by a giant window on the right during the day. I used 2 1k softboxes on the right to simulate the window and a 300 and 650 on the left for fill and hi-light.

man I'm loving it, the images are very sharp and the brevis bokeh is very clean. Which imaging element are you using?

is this going to published on a site or just in this forum? Liking what your posting so far :-)

I'm just blogging. No reason but to document it and maybe help someone out.

I think its CF2 but Arrik will have to answer that one for sure. We will be using 2 Brevis units, one with CF2 and one with CF1Le.

Here are the lights we are using. Nothing fancy.

All the images are so far were shot with a CF2Le on a Brevis MP.1 unit. I may replace the CF2Le with a CFX. I know the CFX is more shallow than the CF2Le but from what I've seen so far the diffusion may be less. I want the more diffused of the two.

Also, we are shooting with Zeiss ZF Primes.

cool, I currently am sporting the cf2 and am considering the new one as well. Are those the same Zeiss cinevate will be selling? Your guyses images are really looking good, from lighting to compositions, everything.

Thanks. No we are using lenses Arrik picked up through the months or years even.

Here he is trying to find some more.

This was shot at night but I lit it to make it seem like it was still day. We ran out of time and had to do this.
