The Fall Of The Big Machine??

Box office is dropping--dropping and dropping. Camera's and their supplementary softwares are getting more powerful, more cheaper, and more readily available. Independent's are sprouting from every side of the horizon. Filmmaking is changing. Robert Rodriguez showed us a glimpse of this movement when he, one man, (with the right resources, of course) can do with a 16mm and two VCRs(lol). And just now he's shooting almost entirely homemade movies (Sin City, and that "Lava boy and Girl movie") with everything edited and composed at his home studio. With the new HVX200 coming out and giving independents the power of near 35mm quality emulation (hopefully!!), what is the future of the Hollywood machine, filmmaking (it's business, it's cost, marketing, etcetra...) and the box office??? That is THE question.

   :undecided :) :lipsrseal :( :engel017:

  very confused and guys but very excited at the same time!

Personally, I hope hollywood grows bigger, so the independent community can grow stronger.
Competition of resources, newer, more efficient equipment... creativity outside of conventional boundaries.

"Independent's" have always been around, you make it seem as though they're a new breed somehow.

Afa "Camera's and their supplementary softwares are getting more powerful, more cheaper, and more readily available", true, but getting your work seen, is just as hard as in the "film" days.

It's also: first, connections, then resourses, you'll need both.

We are almost there. The HVX, will, IMO, make the difference. Never before, in the history of moving image production has there been a camera that offers so much, as far as the variety of image acquisition formats as the HVX promises to do. I come from a film background and have always thought that the minimum standard for acquisition, as far as features, was 4:3 16mm. The HVX, IMO, will change that. Finally, we will have a camera that will offer enough image quality, even when blown up to 35mm, as to not interfer with our stories. DV had ubiquity and that is cool, now we will have quality at near the same price. I am so excited about the future!

Maybe the fall of the big machine will be the break that places like THIS need. This guy has been tireless in his quest to bring alternative films to our area. He basically has a garage that he has old beat up sofas and old-timey school desks in and a small projector. You bring your own beer and snacks and pay $5 at the door. Its a one of a kind experience, that's for sure! And you just cant find this kind of stuff at a regular theater in town.

A couple times a year, he opens the movie night to the public's works. And he will screen your film. He limits the running time to accomodate all submissions.

Hi/Lo festival is screening tomorrow night....the last one was awesome!

thartley,

what a great idea and sounds like a lot of fun! always good to know there are people out there supporting the local talent and independents abroad!

wow that's awesome! It would be nice if we had more of that around, especially around where I live.

I totally agree with the above comment regarding connections (before resources).

The #1 thing in this business is having the ability to get your work out there and seen (ideally by LOTS of people). This is a very challenging pursuit. Cameras like the HDX and home editing solutions only make this pursuit more difficult in terms of competition! We will find an already saturated and competitive film market becoming more and more saturated and difficult to break into.
