The End of the HVX200

Lets put it in this prespective: Would you rather have sex with a CG character or would you do the real thing? I personally like the whole CG thing but honestly I rather have "real" people on set. Who would want to have dinner with a CG Jessica Alba? :)

I think hollywood rely to much on CGI stuff these days. I still prefer guys in rubbersuits (monstersuits of course!!!)

The best battle in Lord of the ring was the battle were *spoiler* Boromir dies *Spoiler ends* No CG there, at least no visible.

The CGI just take away the moviemagic.

people will love these films. Polar Express was impressive for us "pros", but my son never got into it like he would have into the "real Tom Hanks". the audience will get tired of these 3D things. they are fine once for a while, but can you imagine watching a whole afternoon (like 3 films) in 3D??

A-fricken-men! I'm a makeup effects artist and obviously biased, but when possible, practical is best in my book. I love CG for what it can actually do successfully, and there are definite limitations.

Has it replaced matte paintings? To an extent.

Has it replaced stop motion (or go motion)? To an extent.

Has it replaced optical compositing? Definitely.

Has it replaced color correction? Definitely.

So on and so forth. Where it's obviously "better" (i.e. cheaper and/or more efficient) it becomes the norm. Where it's still not up to par, you get people pushing the limits whether successful or not.

I think it was something ridiculous like "almost one hour of Return of the King was all CG". ONE HOUR!!! And it was a "live action" movie. The whole big war with the giant elephants. Mostly fake. Nobody cared, because it was well done, and more importantly, incredibly thrillng.

I actually thought Return of the King lost it a bit by over using CG. The bit where CG Legolas kills the CG elephant thing in the midsts of an entirely CG battle got a sour reaction at the cinema I was in.

My favourite part of the trlogy was the Helm's Deep battle. That was an amazing blend of CG, live action on huge sets and minatures. The wall being blown up looked astounding IMO. That was because it was shot for real at 1/4 scale and then enhanced with CG elements.

People hated Jar Jar because he was annoying, not because he was CG. Gollum was a compelling character, and that made him watchable.

People hated Jar Jar? I better take down my posters and hide my lunch box!

The problem with doing the mocap style stuff is that unless you have REALLY good character movement, that's REALLY exagerated (Andy Circus, anyone?) then it won't look realistic.

What makes animation 'look right' is the propper amount of exageration. Richard Williams (Animation Director of Roger Rabbit has said "Don't try to cheat a walk cycle by rotoscoping someone's walk. Nobody knows why, but it just won't look right."
