I am a big fan of dvxuser.com, and I know that we all love our pannys. For that, I submit this info to all of you:

There is a new company that has hacked into the dvx-100a and are now recording raw uncompressed information that the dvx is truly capable of. Here is what they are getting out of the camcorder:

1.a resolution a little bit over 720p
2.12 bit color
3.a much better dynamic range

Their website is: http://www.reel-stream.com
Their forums are now up so run, dont walk, over to their website.

If there was a way this wouldn't void the warranty, and was less than another couple thousand dollars, I'd be all up for it!

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

What is the price (hardware & software)? I couldn't find that info on the site.

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

I e-mailed them last week and haven't heard anything back yet. I'm sure they're busy.

They probably just hate you.

;)

I don't believe they have a set price yet. They've had lots of inquiries and so far the answer has been "no answer yet" :D

After winning that contest, who doesn't? ;)

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

I e-mailed them a couple weeks ago and Jeremy emailed me back saying that it would be less than the cost of a DVX, pretty vague. so expect the addition to cost between $1 and $3300. plus the voided warranty

Whoa man, deja vu. :o

Ok, I'm over it. ;D

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

How are you supposed to control the iris and stuff if it bypasses all of those in camera controls...does the actual unit have controls on it with video out for preview?

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

Kyle- the device doesnt bypass the controls; I think it just captures the raw data before the camcorder compresses it.
secondly, there are two parts to this device: the hardware side and the sofware side.

Hardware: it captures the raw data iand transmitts them to a laptop.

Software: the software does two main things
1. color corrects ( if you want the video cc)
2. Weaves the frames together in a hd codec

The only thing it bypasses are the in camera DSP. All other controls will work the same ie. focus, zoom, iris, Image stabalization. Basically you are getting the raw image that the CCD captures, so anything that comes after the CDD captures the image will be bypassed.

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

I do have a question though. Can we still adjust the black levels, chroma, ped, etc., on the cam or will we have to use the software to do that?

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

I heard that you can't do it in camera - but the raw file coming out of the camera has such dynamic range and what-not that you can account for all of those controls after the fact.

At least I think that's what I heard...

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

It would be pretty much like shooting a raw file on most digital cameras. You still need to expose correctly, you still need to light correctly and focus, but then you have a file that can be processed extensivley. Right now your camera does capture that but then it makes the decision on how to process the image and how the final compression takes place. By shooting in a raw format you now have complete control over what you want to do to the image. Want to crush the blacks go ahead. want to pull out more detail from the blacks, and not destroy the rest of the picture, go ahead. You now have the latitude to do what you never could before with DV. Now this doesn't make up for bad exposure or whatnot, but to a point you should be able to pull out more detail from highlights and shadows. From there, you can do whatever other color correction you want.

Re: the dvx-100 is capable of shooting 720p!

With that type of control, I dont mind as much if the device voided my warranty. Besides, they may have some type of protection for their customers. Something like a warranty.
