I happened across this show while waiting for Battlestar to come on and while recording Rome. I figured it would a bit goofy, with terrible effects and a Buffy-like vibe. The first couple of episodes were a little flaky, but the show is really starting to come into its own. In the same way some of the later Blade the Series did, but considerably more so.
The show is witty, pretty well written, with just a touch of realistic grittiness to it to make it work. I dig the fact that there is magic in the world, with its own subculture, and at the same time, so very believable and ordinary in its portrayal. A hokey stick of a magic staff, a drumstick for a wand. Gotta love it. (Opening a door for a true Shadowrun series mayhaps??)
The effects are pretty impressive for being series based. Sometimes they are a bit cheesy, sometimes they are down right impressive (his magic bracelet that projects a Celtic looking energy shield for one). Not high budget movie quality, but better than what is the norm for Sci-Fi shows of the like.
If you get a chance, check it out. The characters really make the show.
