The Dreaded Wedding

Hello all.

So, I'm being drafted in to help out on an in-church wedding. The B&G have given me a budget of £100 for the Audio (awful I know, but I have a plan).

I was thinking of the following Audio solution for the Wedding Videography. It's pretty simple, but I was thinking about placing a RODE Video Mic on a mini-tripod at the base of the B&G, pointing up (or diagonally up). To connect it, I was thinking about getting a Mini-Jack extender (good quality), to go into the DSLR.

It's not an ideal solution, but it's the only set-up I can think of on such a budget.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Is it possible that you might do any other weddings or events that need decent sound for your videos? If so, I'd go with your plan, but spend an additional 100 on something like a Zoom H1 (simple, portable, and you'll find lots of other uses for it, even if you buy it with your own money, it will be well spent).

How long will the Videomics cable be, running back to the DSLR. If it's to long, as it's unbalanced you might run into hum and noise, try it out first.

Agreed, add to the $100 and get a H1 or similar. Get it well beforehand to practice with it.

Cheers.

I assume the H1 has a Minijack input? I have looked at hiring, but I know I'll use the Mic again (not for weddings, but I shoot a lot of Music Videos, so it would be nice to have better audio to sync with)

I've looked into hiring a Zoom H4N for the weekend (£44 (($60)), which I am tempted to do, but Im trying to way up options. The main DSLR will only be around 3 metres away from the Microphone, and an old friend did recommend wrapping the Minijack extension & connections with Electrical Tape.

Not sure how effective this is though.

Get the H1 instead of renting the H4. Mini-jack for your Rode mike, and the cost is approx. $99 to own (as opposed to $60 to rent). In Dollars or Pounds, it still makes more sense (ha. pun intended).
