The Conformist - editing and cinematography

Hi
While watching the Conformist last night on DVD(is it available on bluray?) I was struck by how much I still enjoyed the film with the audio turned down. Definitely on my top ten list of the most beautiful cinematography I have seen! Would be curious to find out how much of the look in Bertolucci films is due to Storaro and how much to Bertolucci.

I was also shocked by how often the 180 rule was blatantly ignored in editing! Has anyone else noticed this?

Watching the film also made me wonder, is it possible for cinematography to be TOO beautiful? In that it overpowers the story?

One of my favorite films - and one very few have seen. Storaro, to be certain, had a strong hand in the look of the The Conformist, but my bet is that he and Bertolucci worked very closely on determining camera movement. The movie elegantly goes back and forth between lush and quite spartan, empty visuals. Should be required viewing for anyone who wants to direct or light for camera.
