The Codec Conundrum from Studio Daily

The thing is that Sony's aggressive propaganda does work, that's why they're using it. It only takes one random beginning videographer to read that article, and he most likely will buy Sony instead Panasonic. There are many beginners out there, and the word gets out that "Sony has a better codec", so people buy Sonys.

This is back to the idea of short term gain, long term loss. A beginner is not always a beginner and will learn over time. People exchange ideas and the internet makes it possible for others to share.

So, when a beginner buys into something, but later discovers he/she has been deceived, what do you think the outcome of that will be? How will the user react to Sony in the future? What will the user's comments about Sony be in the future?

In the pre-internet day, the impact of an unhappy user was very limited, but today, a user can reach many other users. Now add their voices together and watch what happens.

Granted that marketing is always playing a bit with the "facts", call it spin, to make their product look better than the others, but in general there are limits to what you can and can't say.

You can say that Sony MPEG-2 @50Mbps is better than Panasonic's AVC-I @50Mbps, because the horizontal resolution is higher and the vertical and horizontal color resolution is higher.

BUT to suggest that HDV at 25Mbps is better than Panasonic's AVC-I @50Mbps, is flat out WRONG!!! Let's try a whip pan on HDV and AVC-I and see who wins. Oh yes, what about bit depth, AVC-I with 10 bits and HDV with 8 bits.

So, it doesn't take much for someone to expose the lie.

Sincerely,

Bob Diaz

Hi all,

Good Public Relations is telling the truth (or at least not lying). Ask anyone who has lied.

Lies (whether by omission or outright deception) always have a way of surfacing.

In this case, I think that the story wants to create case for something created using a version of moonstruck statistics, and worse, bad journalism masquerading as good reporting - a bad day for Studio magazine.

I don't know who will suffer most Studio or Sony, probably not Sony.
