The Canon C500 question...

The 1dc has about 12 stops in log mode according to Shane Hurlbut. The C300/C500 are closer to 13 according to the bbc.

Re all the pricing comments, the C500 is expected to be $25,000 here in Auz add a ki pro quad and a pair of drives and that's about $30,000.
Its cheaper than an epic and you are getting Canon reliability out of the box, cheap accessories and lenses and a great image that you can edit with right away cause its prores. All these things sound great to me. Best of all there is awesome support here for Canon and none at all for red. So for me I would never consider a Red for that reason (and so many others) but the C500 looks like a really attractive, affordable and dependable option.

Why does everyone keep comparing the C500 to the Epic rather than the Scarlet? I'm genuinely asking, in case I'm missing something. But the C500 is 4K (like the Scarlet) where as the Epic is 5K. You can have a Scarlet package that lasts you all day for $18,000.

Also, unless the dynamic range tests are performed by the same people using the same test, then it's hard to compare two different cameras' dynamic range.

I guess I compare the Epic to the C500 as they both are 'premium models' for want of a better term. The Resolution is only a small part of the deal. 4K vs 5K is a bit of a null issue for me.

Scarlet is a worthy contender for anyone looking for a 4k solution. For me the lack of support, the 2k crop issue, power consumption and the reports of reliability issues are reasons I look past it.

Also keep in mind the c500 can do 2k at 444 as well as 422 that's something the Red's can't do due to the Bayer pattern. 444 is prety serious territory color wise.

The RED's are perfectly capable of 4:4:4 at 2k. You just have to do the downscaling yourself.

Im not sure about these stop number to be honest, i expect the new 1dc to be a little better than the c300 here. Have to see for the c500 but apparently it's exactely the same sensor... I will rate the c300 lower than 13.

I have no interest to defend Red but i think you are a little ufair with then. They constantly working on new firmware with more features, give then free and they offer you a sensor path upgrade. They also make the RAW workflow much easier than before. Canon on its side doesn't even dare to answer my email when i ask informations about a C500 demo in London. So you know, i keep myself open

You can't shoot 120fps with that Canon & Ki-Pro combo, nor can you record RAW without attaching a computer. We still don't know if Canon have fixed the fuse problem that the C300 suffers from or if exposure monitoring has been improved from the C300. All of which they need to do before the C500 is compared to Epic.

I haven't used the epic more than a handful of times and never touched the post on those jobs. Could you explain how that is able to be done as I didn't believe the Reds worked that way, the Bayer pattern is not a 444 color space. Keen to learn if I'm incorrect here.
