The cameras and lenses behind 2018 Oscar nominated films

Oscar nominated films are almost always shooting with ARRI or Panavision cameras because they've got the budget and it's the norm in the film industry. And occasionally they use RED for VFX heavy films.

I'm a lot more interested in what people use to shoot lower budget Indie films, especially when they have to stretch a miniscule budget but still produce great looking images. This is the kind of work that I can relate to.

Actually what surprised me was the one film shooting arri pro-res - I found that interesting. I also don't think they are all big-budget - and I mean shooting an arri alexa mini - it may be the 2nd best camera choice, but it's 50k to buy? That's not that crazy and the rental although much more than say c300, it's still not outlandish. The lens choices can be interesting at times, but those also are mostly the usual suspects. I still thought it was cool to know having watched some of those films.

I might be wrong, but I would hazard a guess that the majority of members on this site do not own ARRI cameras and don't shoot the majority of their work with ARRI cameras.

It used to be that Sundance winners shot with just about anything that could capture an image, but now most of the non-documentary winners are also using ARRI cameras. ( the under funded Sundance documentary category still shoots with everything including iPhone/GoPro/DSLR/Blackmagic/Sony FS cameras )
