The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

I think Signs would have been a much better film if they

SPOILER (if anybody cares)

didn't show the alien at the end. The scene with the kids/home video scared the bejeezus out of me, but the CGI at the end ruined it :-/

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

I've been having that same conversation about that DAMN ALIEN for the last 2 days...

That stupid CGI Alien in that goddamn Spiderman stance...with his see through arm...ruined it for EVERYONE!!!

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

THANK YOU!!! Everyone I try to tell that to says I'm stupid, and that the suspense payed off.

GO RENT A HITCHCOCK MOVIE.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

TC speak to those that can understand what you are saying! Ride On! Loose the alien!

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

First let me say I live unbreakable, the only flaw i can really find (personally) is the seen where the kid wants to shot his dad, it totally doesnt work and comes off just being painfully laughable and misplaced.

Ok, now, I really liked signs and think its a deffinite cut above most films released, so as far as i'm concerned, Night's on a roll and i cant wait for Village.

BUT this thing about the alien, I can't see how you could NOT show the alien. Personally if i went through the whole thing and then didnt gte to see it, id be pretty unsatisfied, plus and more importantly you kinda have to in context of the story. I mean, maybe i was was the only one, but I kept getting clues that it might possibly be a hoax or, i dunno something other than alien invaders, right up to the basment where the aliens are making lots of noise and pushing the doors, yet not opening them. Seeing the alien is THE confirmation that yep, no doubt, this is real. And how are u supposed to shoot that scene WITHOUT showing the alien?

Ok now for this embaresing part...

I didn't know the alien a CG. HOLD UP! ok? I knew the part where the water melts his shoulder was CG, and the see through stuff was CG, but i swear, i never thought it was anything but a guy in a suit until I saw the making of crap.

Ok, here we go, c'mon guys, do ur worst, GET IT OVER WITH! :-[

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

The anticipation of the terror is more terrifying than the terror itself. Someone (I'm pretty sure Hitchcock) said something similar to that. Not seeing the alien, but knowing it exists, makes it look like the worst possible thing you can imagine. Showing it, I saw a CGI creation, not a scary, unimagineable alien. If I never saw it, then there wouldn't have been anything to take me out of the movie, and it would have been *much* better IMO.

Also, the Alien at the *end* was CGI, but I'm pretty sure in the 'home video' it was a guy in a suit. That home video freaked me out - you couldn't see enough to take you 'out of the zone.'

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

ok, wait, seriously? you guys would have been happier if there was no alien at the end?

Seriously, how would that have worked? Also, I think that if hitchcock made an alien movie (stay with me here) even he would have given us the money shot at the end.

Not only that fact, but theres no way i can think of to make that scene without an alien in it.

And am i the only one to catch that hoax thing. I mean for me the tension was in the possiblity of them going back up stairs just to find out they'd been robbed or something (ok, thats stupid, but you know what i mean, soething else, this is a Shamalan movie after all). The Alien at the end was the first time i knew for sure throught the whole movie that is was real.

i guess im the only one, but i never would have guessed so many ppl do think that the alien at the end was not absolutly necessary in one form or another.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

Well, that's one thing. You said that you couldn't see how that scene could have happened without the audience seeing the alien: that's the problem. That scene shouldn't have been in the movie ;D

And you did see the alien, SORT OF, in the home video, and on the rooftop if i remember correctly. You don't see enough of it to ruin it for you, but it confirmed in my mind that it was aliens. I personally didn't think it was a hoax.

In my opinion, the movie would have been much stronger (albeit MUCH shorter, not long enough for a studio theatrical release) if they ended it in the basement (or was it a shed, I can't remember enough). When the aliens were rattling the doors and such, and then dissapeared. Even if that wouldn't have been a brilliant ending, it would have been *much* better than showing the alien, and confirming to us all that "it was a movie". I was drawn in up until that point - seeing the CGI took me right out.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

I really liked Signs. For everything it was and everything it wasn't. I just liked it...
BUT!

for the millions of dollars they had to spend, I didn't like the way the alien scene was portrayed. But that's just me.

I was hoping it would end and you didn't know if it was real or not...but that would stop the "swing away" trail he wrote leading up to that scene the WHOLE movie.

I think it would've been better if it was just the alien hand and everything else were reflections...so you never saw the alien in full "CGI" glory...But you REALLY wanted to...

That feeling of extremely wanting to know...what that sound was...who killed that person...what do they look like...WHY!!!

...that's suspense!

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

That would have definitely been better!

I still think, though, that it didn't even need to have a confrontation at all between the humans and aliens, reflections or not.

But for sure, if it *had* to show something, and he *had* to "swing away"...well then, that definitely would have made me like it a heck of a lot more!

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

well well... this is ****.

According to the Associated Press, the Sci Fi Channel admitted Friday that it lied last month in claiming it was at odds with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and was making an unauthorized biography about his "buried secret." The hoax was part of a "guerilla marketing campaign" that went too far, network president Bonnie Hammer said.

The network announced in December that the reclusive Shyamalan, maker of The Sixth Sense and Signs, had agreed to participate in a documentary about his life to run in connection with this summer's release of his new movie, The Village.

Sci Fi said last month, however, that Shyamalan had soured on the documentary when the questions got too personal. Documentarians Nathaniel Kahn and Callum Greene pressed on and made a three-hour film, "The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan," without his cooperation, the network said.

In an interview, Greene described how Shyamalan's "cooperation dried up." A network spokesman told the AP that Sci Fi was confident it had legal grounds to air the film and would probably never work with Shyamalan again. In a news release, Sci Fi said Shyamalan had attempted to shut down production of the "disturbing expose."

It was all a lie, and there is no buried secret, Hammer said Friday. "We created a fictional special that was part-fact and part-fiction, and Night was part of the creation from the beginning," the network chief said

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

"This marketing strategy is not consistent with our policy at NBC," said Rebecca Marks, NBC entertainment spokesperson. "We would never intend to offend the public or the press and value our relationship with both."

Yet they are still marketing the crap out of this on broadcast television. If they meant what they said then they probably should not air it. I have not seen it so I obviously have no way of knowing if that is true.

Now we have two examples of “mockumentaries” currently in the public domain, and I hope that this comes back to bite them in the ass really hard or cinema as we know it will become the reality TV of the next decade. I guess it’s inevitable. :-[

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

Both Disney and NBC however did the right thing when their fact checkers uncovered issues with the "documentary works" they owned, and dumped them, or at least distanced themselves from them for ethical reasons. There is indeed hope for the world yet.

Still, I think that people no longer understand what a documentary is, and perhaps think that "This is Spinal Tap," is the model for the documentary of the new century.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

This is the same tactic used when The Blair Witch Project was released -- SciFi made an hour-long "documentary" on it, which was of course totally faked and bogus, but I don't know if they ever owned up to that.

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

Yeah, I had "Blair Witch" on the brain when I saw the ads for "Buried Secret."

Re: The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan.

I never saw Blair Witch, I remember it coming out but I never thought it was a documentary.

No, it was one of the major complaints of an otherwise creditable movie (for the budget that is.) I am 100% against fake news or fake documentary work, or work that does not follow at least a semblance of the standard for either, being labelled for marketing purposes as anything other than fiction (op / ed if it is political). The major film festivals have gotten sloppy in recent years accepting peices which are not documentary, and hollywood is following suite.

Now, Spinal Tap let everyone know it was fake, and it was a masterpiece. Fake documentary can be good, I am not arguing that, merely that filmmakers should strive to protect this one tiny area of truth in our industry.
