The Brevis35 "pre-flip" package

Dennis Wood

DVXuser Sponsor
We've put together a pre-flip package that will get you our complete setup with a Brevis HD adapter, full 45cm heavy wall carbon rails system (world's more versatile rails system??), Brevis-to-rails mount, charger/AC adapter, Pelican case and a flip module reservation for just over $1200 :-) The units still (and always will) support interchangeable imaging elements and full support for 35mm motion film lenses (PL and OCT19 mounts). All of our lens mounts feature micro-collimation for perfect lens mount alignment as you swap between Nikon, Canon FD, Canon EOS, Pentax K, Pentax M42, Minolta MD, PL, and OCT19 mounts. Our flip module for existing Brevis owners, and flip package purchasers will be under $400.

At the end of the day, that would get you full carbon rails support and everything you need to use a Brevis unit flipped, or non-flipped for just over $1600. With our follow focus system about to be released, you'll also have access to preferred pricing for existing Brevis owners (under $550 with two annodized aluminum focus gears!)

Cheers, and thanks as always for your support :-)

That $1600 kit would inlcude the following:

Pelican case with charger/AC adapter
CF1 or CF1L and the option to use other interchangeable elements.
Brevis HD bundle with micro-collimation lens mount, and our 72mm HD achromat for non-flip use.
45cm (18") heavy wall carbon rails system. This rails system is extremely versatile and will work with pretty much any conceivable setup out there.
Brevis to rail mount (super solid!)
Removable Flip module with it's own specialized optics for flip use.

From our perspective, that's a very sweet deal :-) When you see the footage we've got coming this week from the flipped Brevis, you'll agree. A solid week of late nights and extensive work on the waveform monitor/scope has yielded the best edge to edge sharpness I've ever seen from the adapter, and an XH-A1 setup that is incredibly free of chromatic aberration. We've also quantified a few oddities including the fact that the Brevis can be used a few stops in on your 35mm lenses, with nearly zero penalty in light loss.

For existing Brevis owners, strap on a 50mm f1.4 and check out what happens as you stop the 50mm down from f1.4 to f4.0 with regard to light loss :-)

Dennis will you have any pictures of that full package on the A1? I have an A1 and am gonna dive in head first into the 35mm adapter world by December. The only think that I'd need to make the package 100% is a follow focus and matte box right?
So: A1 + this package + follow focus + matte box + lenses = perfect camera package with flipped image giving the A1 the best results it could possibly get right?

The XH-A1 has always been a problem for us, and in our CA test grid, it shows a distressing amount of CA all by itself. The test grid is a vertical matrix that has about 70 vertical ribs. We light them so one side of the rib is lit and the other in shadow. Blue/yellow CA from the test lenses is very easy to see this way, particulary at the lens periphery. What we're seing on the flip rig is that the XH-A1 lens is definitely happier with the flip setup, and records an extremely clean image. There's far less CA than the bare cam framed identically. The best part of all of this is that we're getting a tack sharp corner to corner image using a 16:9 frame size that is 8% wider than the 35mm SLR standard. One of lenses we're going to be playing with tomorrow is a rather slow f4.5 18-28 zoom.

The entire XHA1/brevis flip/tripod rig got toppled today (third time for the XH-A1 since we've had it) , and other than a bent up mattebox flag, it survived unscathed. I'll give props to Canon for building a cam that can take a beating like this.

Thursday is looking good here, so we'll be shooting all day. I have a feeling you XHA1 owners out there are going to like it. I haven't been this excited about shooting with that cam for a long time :-)

Oddly, my 55mm F1.2 canon FD lens, doesnt seem to lose any light when yo ustop from 1.2 to F2. I think its broken sometimes....

Hey Dennis, I'm borrowing a bunch of lenses for this weekend and will try out the new GG. I can't wait to try this flip module but now I am going to have to adjust my brain to move the camera with the image right-side up.

Tim,
I've been trying to tell you guys about the low f-stop peculiarities of these adapters for quite some time. I suspect that you've got it backwards though.

Its probably not that your lens doesn't close down from f1.2 to 2.0, but rather that it doesn't open up from f2 to f1.2. Or rather the adapter just doesn't see any difference.
You can tell if your lens is really opening up or not by just looking at the image on the diffusion screen with your eye instead of the video camera. The lens is probably fine- at least it is with mine.

My suspicion is that in certain situations that vary with the adapter, the lens, the video camera that its on and the nature of the diffusing screen - the additional light that comes from the side of the iris in a wide f-stop simply isn't picked up by video camera.

Probably has something to do with the distance from which the camera is seeing the screen. Maybe related to but different from vignetting issues.

That's my experience anyway - your mileage may vary and maybe there is actually something wrong with your lens. This is one reason I think its very tricky to have absolute numbers for how fast an adapter is.

Which adapter are you seeing this on?

thats what i ment by broken....

Everything. Sg, Brevis, Go35..... its just that one lens.

Maybe your lens is broken, but I suspect not. Do you have other fast lenses to compare?

It's easy to test it off the video camera, either by just looking at the GG of an adapter by eye, testing it in a 35mm camera, or looking at the iris as you open it up. You should see the light level change from f1.2 to f2 in all those situations, but perhaps not on your adapter.

I see this with all my 1.4 Nikkors to varying degrees on most adapters I've seen. My lenses are not broken.

Dennis went to the site. When can we buy the flip for previous users?

Removable Flip module with it's own specialized optics for flip use. (Just in time for Christmas)
