The Bottom Line -- Will my 501 hold a Kessler 8?

It's a yes or no question, but let me give you some specifics.

I'm in desperate need of an affordable crane. My productions are lacking a certain "mmph" that I think a crane would give me. (I've done my research, and the Kessler is for me.)

Here's the thing - The biggest/strongest tripod I have available is only a Bogen 501 Head on 3046 Legs.

I'm hoping that if I get the KC8 the tripod would last me for at least a year. With light-duty use and a little TLC, Will my Bogen 501 survive a KC8?

I'd concur with Ram. If you use a 501, you'll quickly realize that once you start attaching items; matte box, filters, etc., that the crane will become unwieldy and difficult to work with. Your best bet would be to upgrade.

Well That's the thing. I just bought this tripod a few months ago.

I probably won't be adding any big items like a matte box, filters, motorized head, etc, seeing as how I am a high school student just mowing lawns. If I use just the bare essentials, just my dvx and probably a zoom commander, will the 501 last me through one football season? (I guess a year might be unrealistic.)

I'd like to end up selling this tripod and getting a nicer one, but that is pretty unrealistic considering my parents barely let me get this one.

Even though I upgraded I would say that you can make it work, but you will have to be careful trying to do manual tilt mode and you might even want a second person there to help you get it back into the upright position after tilting. I would also say that selling the tripod after using it with the crane for a while is unrealistic because you will be putting some serious wear and tear on it. The head will probably not function well after extended use, and you might have to clamp your legs to make sure it does not collapse on you. That being said you can make it work as I did, good luck to you.
