Chris's Threads of old movies continues. Tonight's entry: The Big Sleep.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038355/

Bogart plays one of the defining roles for the "hard-boiled detective" type and excells at it. This is a film from a time when every woman was a dame and regardless of where you were you could always get a glass of scotch.

The plot may be convaluted at times, but the dialog is so sharp that your brain will have paper cuts when the credits roll.

Let's see if this can generate more discussion than the Marnie thread.

Now you're speaking my language...Bogartese.

His portrayal of Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep is, in a word, electric. This was the second film in which Bogie played opposite his soon-to-be-wife Lauren Bacall (they first worked together in the previous year's To Have and Have Not.) What continues to amaze me in the amount of blatant onscreen innuendo that made its way past the censors. Some of the dialog between Marlowe and Bacall's Vivian Rutledge is spicy to say the least.

There are enough twists and turns in the plot to fill a thrill park. This is especially true of the more recently restored 1945 cut that was changed after the war's end.

Highly recommended for all, even those who are not fans of the period (gasp) or of Bogart himself (Gasp!)

Vivian: You've forgotten one thing - me.
Philip Marlowe: What's wrong with you?
Vivian: Nothing you can't fix.

-or-

Philip Marlowe: She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up.

PS- I musta missed the Marnie thread. Oh well...keep 'em coming, Chris

I think I've only seen the 1945 cut now that you mention it. I'll have to fix that.
